Matt Saunders, played in My Super Ex Girlfriend by Luke Wilson, is, on the surface, everything a reasonable woman would want. He’s good looking, has a good job, and, most important, is nice, gentlemanly sort who will treat a girl with respect. Unfortunately he seems to attract the sort of female who has-well-issues that eventually become too off putting to be overcome with good times and heavy sex. When My Super Ex Girlfriend starts, he has not had a date in six months, so disillusioned is he.
Indeed, he doesn’t seem to realize that the perfect woman for him is working right next to him at the design company he is employed by. Hannah Lewis, played by Anna Faris, is everything a reasonable guy would like. Beautiful, friendly, tolerant of certain juvenile male behaviors, she would seem the perfect match. Of course she has a boy friend, albeit one who is obviously a loser.
Part of the problem is that Matt’s best friend is Vaughn Haig, played by Rainn Wilson, who fancies himself a ladies man but is a little too slimy and creepy to pull it up. Goaded by his good friend, Matt tries to pick up a mousy young thing named Jenny Johnson, played by Uma Thurman, usually not mousy. She shoots him down at first, but then is impressed when he chases down a purse snatcher. So they make a date, have wild sex, and things unfortunately proceed in the usual pattern.
They proceed so because Jenny is neurotic, paranoid, jealous, needy, and manipulative. In short she is like every other girl poor Matt has ever gone out with. Even more unfortunate for Matt, Jenny has a secret. Or rather, Jenny is the secret identity of a super hero named “G Girl” (no one knows what “G” stands for) who spends her time fighting crime, rescuing fire and accident victims, and generally holding up her end in the truth, justice, and American way area. She can fly, is invulnerable, has super strength, has laser vision, and is very irritable.
The last Matt finds out when he tries to break up with her. Some women scorned will let the air out of ones tires. Only G Girl can pick up ones whole car and park it in orbit around the Earth. Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction boiled a rabbit. G Girl hurtles a live and apparently hungry shark through the window.
It looks like Matt has an unsolvable problem; a woman with god like powers who wants him to suffer. Fortunately the key to resolving Matt’s problems lays in G Girl’s arch nemesis, Professor Bedlam, played by Eddie Izzard (no, that’s what he really calls himself, no doubt inspired by “Professor Chaos” from South Park.)
Complications ensue, secrets are revealed, and plot twists happen. My Super Ex Girlfriend is directed by Ivan Reitman, who directed such comedy classics as Ghostbusters, Kindergarten Cop, and Dave. My Super Ex Girlfriend is funny enough and has enough heart in it to be a very pleasant way to spend an hour and a half in the dark, having fun.
