On of the best things about America is the fact that you can attend the same kind of festival, in this case a Folk Festival, in different parts of the country and not see the same entertainment, food or merchandise in any of them. They emphasize the great differences in our culture and the fact that the same people can go to different ones and have a good time at each, just goes to show how much Americans appreciate our differences.
On April 20-22 2007 you will have a chance to experience a Folk Festival New England style at The New England Folk Festival in Mansfield, Massachusetts. This is their 63rd year and it is a very popular event, so make your plans early.
There will be so much to see and do, you will be hard pressed to decide which to do first. Of course there will be food vendors with choices from around the world for you to enjoy and keep your energy high enough to do all you want to do. So far they are expecting Smoothies, Turkish, Indian, Lithuanian, Middle Eastern, Chili, Hungarian, Filipino, Italian, Cotton Candy and Soups. New England is so much more than chowder.
There will be plenty of music and dance going on and you can even participate in some of the dances. All of the performers are donating their time and talent, so be sure to stop and see as many as you can and let them know you appreciate their contributions.
Of course, there will be a room full of crafts for you to browse through and there will be demonstrations of the different crafts such as Turned Wood, Flamework Glass Art, Crocheted Beadwork, New Zealand-style Bone Carvings, Guitars, Musical Instruments, Handmade Shoes and many, many more.
After you have made your way through the crafts, stop in at the bazaar an see what else you are attracted too. As with any bazaar, there will be items from all cultures including Turkish, Native American, Scottish, Irish and Indian among with many everyday items like clothes and bags.
Take some time to bring the kids to the Activity room and you can all learn to do things like make a hobby horse, weave and make puppets, things you can do with the children at home every easily.
And as for those events you can participate in, there will be Folk Dancing, sing-a-longs, story telling and who knows what else. They do not have the complete list yet and if they keep up the tradition, and they will, there will be events going on every hour that the festival is open.
This is mostly an indoor festival, so if Mother Nature does not cooperate, there should not be any interruption at all. So come and see what New England has to offer and have yourself a terrific weekend.
