NYCLAN was started by Brain Tang and wife Kia Song who were looking for space to play Halo with friends. Eventually Halo with friends became weekend tournaments and the start of the hottest gaming spot in New York City. NYCLAN stands for New York City Local Area Network and is pronounced Ni-Clan. If you are a gamer in the West Village this is the place for you with a large selection of games and consoles to choose from. NYCLAN was first opened in November of 2005 boasting 17 TV’s and the ability to accommodate up to 70 gamers at a time. Whether you are in to fighting games, team combat, or the old classics NYCLAN has it all.
The modern equivalent of the old game arcade, NYCLAN offers a wide range of choices for gamers. Choose from Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, X Box, Nintendo Wii, or Playstation 3 game consoles and what seems like hundreds of games. There’s Halo 1 and 2, Tekken, Ghost Recon 2, Splinter Cell, Mario Brothers, Vice City, Need For Speed, Tetris and many others as well.
NYCLAN is strictly a video gaming “arcade”. It has the cozy feel of a basement but with all the high tech gaming systems you could want. During the week NYCLAN sees a wide mix of young and old, and competitive to casual players. Fridays are reserved as fight night with combat games only and is by far the most popular day of the week. Saturdays are dedicated to Halo, and Sundays are strictly war games.
NYCLAN also has leagues and tournaments and it is recommended to buy a membership if you plan on gaming often. There are several membership plans including standard, weekend, and unlimited game play. If you are interested in membership you can check out the website at http://www.nyclan.net/membership. All memberships include a weekend event but some do not include weekday playing time. There are many membership levels so there is sure to be one that is perfect for you.
NYCLAN is set up in two large rooms with 16 gaming stations at 4 players each. The casual and competitive players mostly do not mix between the rooms as is would make game play unfair. But, there is plenty of trash talking all around so have your come backs ready. NYCLAN can also be rented out for private parties, just call them direct at (212) 863-9469.
If you are all about video gaming this is the place you want to be! It’s relatively cheap compared to other forms of entertainment and they are open all the time. During the week NYCLAN’s hours are 1pm-10pm. On Friday’s and Saturday’s they are open until 3am and NYCLAN closes early on Sunday’s at 7pm.
