South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, but packing for a trip to South Africa can be quite difficult. South Africa is well known for its year round-warm climate. Summers in South Africa can climb well over 115 degrees and during winter time the temperatures become cool on the seaside and get well below freezing temperature in the mountains and in some inland areas. A good idea before packing your bags for your trip to South Africa is to check your calendar, because summers in South Africa begin in November, with the peak months being in December and January. The winter in South Africa begins in May.
If you’re visiting South Africa during the hotter months then it is a good idea to pack lightweight summer clothes. Take plenty of t-shirts, shorts and sunglasses. Also bring a couple of sweaters or long sleeved button down shirts just in case it happens to get cool during the evening and also to protect your skin from insect bites. Bring a swimsuit, sunglasses, sunscreen and hats if you plan on visiting any of the many famous beaches in South Africa. Wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen is recommended when spending time in the plains. If you plan on visiting any of the wild game reserves in South Africa then don’t forget to pack long sleeved shirts, a heavy windbreaker and pants. Don’t wear bright colors, instead wear neutral tones so you can look less conspicuous to the animals you’ll be looking at. If you plan to visit the bigger cities and the beach towns then it’s a great idea to pack sandals. Comfortable athletic shoes or walking shoes are good if you plan on taking a hike in the mountains or visiting the reserves.
Take an umbrella with you to protect yourself from the South African summer showers. It’s also a good idea to check with your doctor about anti-malarial pills if you plan on being in the northern inland areas of South Africa. When you’re packing don’t forget to bring a carry-on bag on the plane that includes everything you need in case your luggage happens to get lost. Your passport, change of clothes, extra contact lenses, all medications, glasses and money are the things that should be in your carry-on bag. Only bring the things you need, don’t bring items that are not necessary on the trip.
Another thing to remember is to only wear khaki outfits if you’re planning on visiting a game reserve because South African residents don’t wear khaki outfits, only game rangers usually wear them. Most tourists can be spotted from afar because they choose to wear a khaki outfit from head to toe, this attire can lead to mugging so try to avoid wearing it.
Bring all the medication that you need on the trip, talk to your doctors about certain health conditions that may affect you in South Africa. The most important thing to remember when visiting South Africa is to have fun, enjoy the breathtaking views of the country, enjoy the beaches, the culture, the food and the people.
