From the beginning there has been an intriguing allure from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, that has drawn even non-traditional pirate fans. Perhaps it has been Orlando Bloom fans, Keirra Knightly fans, or the bizarre yet intriguing pirate we find in Johnny Depp. His character, Captain Jack Sparrow repulses us, yet draws us to himself at the same time. Is he perhaps both the epitome of our desire to break free, yet continue our grasp on goodness? Whatever the reason, the Pirate movies have captivated American audiences, and Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures is bargaining that they can get into our pockets with at least one more.
According to the March 15, edition of USA Today online, May 25th, is the planned release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: at the World’s End. Most of the stars we love will still be featured, which will help draw the crowds back in, especially Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp. Depp has also said that a couple of the new cast members will be fresh and surprising to the audience. When filming with Chow Yun-Fat, the Shanghai Pirate, Deep commented “that the movie took the viewers to some eccentric places the audiences should enjoy” He said the movie held, “some kind of new surprises, that they’re sort of posing, messing with.” It sounds like there may be a lot of special features in store.
IESB, went out on a limb when they spoke with ten year old actor Dominic Scott Kay. They confirmed that Dominic confirmed his role in the film, but that he was prohibited from speaking about his role. Perhaps ten year old Dominic will play a young Sparrow, since we expect to see Sparrow’s father in the film.
When we left Captain Jack Sparrow, in The Curse of the Black Pearl he was swallowed by the Kraken. It is little surprise that he survives, but is doomed to sail the seven seas on The Flying Dutchman under the control of Davy Jones. There was no hope of freedom, as Captain Barbossa who returned from the dead at the end of the last movie; Elizabeth Swann; and Will Turner escaped to freedom. Now, the three must sail beyond the ends of the known earth to find where ships sale off into the afterlife. To do this they must find and do battle with Chinese pirate Sao Feng.
In the final battle, everyone must choose sides. Lives and fortunes depend on it, but so does the freedom of the pirate way. Will the pirate way survive to make another sequel. Depp has said he enjoys the movies for now, but the fun will eventually have to end. We’ll have to see if At the World’s End blows the 1.7 million made be the first two Pirate’s Movie’s out of the Water.
