Blokus is an online game as well as a board game. Either way, each player gets 21 game pieces of the same color. All 21 pieces are the same shapes for each player. The pieces are made up of smaller parts that are squares. Each piece could be 1,2,3,4, or 5 squares in varying shapes. The pieces are very similar to the pieces in the game Tetris but there is a bigger variety of shapes and each color only has one of each shape.
Blokus is a strategy game where you play against 3 other players. Or you can play with 2 players but you each play two colors. The object of the game is to place a maximum of your 21 pieces on the board. The more pieces you place on the board, the higher your score will be.
But, of course, it is not that simple. There are only certain ways you can put your pieces on the board. Play starts with the blue player and proceeds to yellow, red, then green. The first piece of each player must be placed in one of the four corners starting in the upper left with blue and going clockwise around the board. The player may place any piece he chooses in the corner spot. Play then continues with blue, yellow, red, and green each placing a piece, in turn until one can no longer place a piece on the board.
After the first piece is placed, each piece must be placed so that the pieces of the same color touch only at the corners. Pieces must never come in contact with the sides of a piece that is the same color. Different colors may play against your color thus blocking your play. Some strategic moves to help you win the game are as follows.
First of all, always try to keep your pieces moving toward the center of the board. If you keep to your corner, you will quickly be blocked. Also, you will want to try to place your largest (5 square) pieces at the beginning of the game. As play continues, there is less and less space thus it is harder to place the larger pieces. In addition, you will always want to keep the maximum number of corners open so that you will have maximum play space available. Try to use the different shapes to create more open play space on the board for yourself.
With careful play, you can note which directions to play and where you can easily use your opponent to get to another side of the board. When playing two colors, you can use the together to play against and block your opponent! You also want to note what spaces you can place your pieces in to block your opponents most advanced pieces.
You should also note which pieces you have left and which pieces your opponent has left. Your opponents remaining pieces will give you clues as to his remaining moves. Be aware of where your opponent may play and do your best to block him. Always be patient in your moves so you get the optimal play out of your pieces.
Sometimes the smallest pieces are the key to the game, especially the one block. You can use these small pieces to advance to a part of the board that you might not otherwise be able to get to. But, on the other hand, if you use the small square as your last piece you will get additional points for it.
The winner of this game is the one who has the most points at the end of the game. You earn one point for each square that is covered on the game board. This can be from one to five points per piece depending on the size of the piece. Plus, if you use ALL of the pieces of one color, that color earns an additional 15 points for that game. PLUS, if you use the one square as the last piece when using all of your pieces, you will earn an additional 5 points for a bonus of 20 for finishing the color and using the one square last.
This game can be played against the computer or you can invite friends to play against you. I first found it very challenging to beat the computer but after a lot of practice, I found that it is very possible. When playing against the computer, if you get stuck, you can ask for a “hint” and the computer will show you where to place your piece. You will not get any points for that piece however.
I have found fun “friends” to play the game with too. You can invite friends after seeing their “rating” and country of origin. Or you can open a game and wait for opponents to join into your game. While playing with friends, you can even chat with them in a chat window on the side of the game board.
