Water and soda bottle lids are generally tossed away with the bottle, but there’s lots of different things you can make with the caps, like jewelry. Little girls will love the look of a choker made from a pop bottle cap and they’re very easy to make.
Cut two pieces of hemp, or ribbon, and hold each by one end, in the same hand. While holding the two ends together, twist the opposite ends at the same time, creating a spiral effect. You’ll want to keep the twist rather loose, since later, you’ll be inserting the bottle cap between the two pieces. When both pieces are completely entwined, hook the hemp ends to necklace hardware. You’ll find the hardware at most craft or department stores and there’s various types from which to choose.
After you’ve attached the hardware to each end of the necklace mark the center by folding the necklace in two and holding it at the fold. Right in the center, spread the two pieces of twine apart, just enough to insert the cap. Glue one twine center to one side edge of the lid, then the opposite fold of the cord to the opposite side of the lid.
Cut a picture from a magazine, or purchase a flat, round trinket, and glue it to the pop bottle lid. This makes it easy for the child to choose the exact theme of the necklace. You can also use scrapbook stickers to beautify the necklace. Choose ones that have one giant initial, done in calligraphy or a sticker with an image of the child’s favorite animal. Kids will also enjoy necklaces made with a picture cut from a product box, like Barbie.
A different way to make the necklace is to string beads onto a piece of cord, then string the cap in the center, before finishing with the beads on the opposite side. To do this, have an adult pierce the sides of the cap with a hot nail. Use a potholder to heat up a nail and pass it from one side, through the center, then through the opposite side. Now the cap can be strung as if it were a bead.
Before piercing the lid you can spray paint the cap gold, silver, or a different color so that the sides of the cap won’t look so much like a pop or water bottle lid. Attach the front picture, or novelty, before or after stringing the lid onto the necklace.
To make the cap feel smoother against the skin, you can either use sandpaper to file down rough edges, or cover it in felt or velvet. Just glue a square onto the lid, covering the concave side of the lid, then trim to be an exact fit for the lid. The felt or velvet will provide a much softer feel to the cap. Make bracelets just like you would the necklaces, using smaller pieces of twine.
String many caps together – with or without beads between them – for a very interesting hatband. To make a cowboy theme, glue various pictures of tepees, horses, fish, streams, wilderness and bears, on each lid. Spray painting the lids first will make all the difference when making a band for a cowboy hat. The hatband looks best when the lids are painted a similar color as the hat. That way, the pictures stand out and the lids don’t. Thick paper, such as greeting cards or glossy magazine covers, are the best for gluing onto the lids.
If you drink loads of bottled water and/or pop begin saving the lids. There are so many things that can be made from them you’ll be crafting all year long. Choose a suitable night and let your daughter have a jewelry-making party which will cost you next to nothing!
