The funniest thing happened when I was selling doors door to door as a kid; I made the sale. I was too young to realize how hard most people considered door to door sales to be. In door to door sales of doors, you are selling something to someone when they don’t exactly appear to need it. Most people don’t have a high opinion of door to door salesmen. In fact, most people simply shut the door on door to door salesmen. I recently went to a sermon at my church and it focused on open doors. Being in the home improvement business now, I have an appreciation for open doors. Even the concept of open doors is of interest to me. I’ve often heard the saying, “When one door shuts another one will open”. I know often people look down when a door is shut in their face and never see the next open door. While positive thinking will not keep every door open, it will certainly help you keep moving to the next door. Zig Ziglar (author of many books including one titled of Secrets of Closing the Sale) said it best: “Positive thinking won’t lead you to anything, but it will help you do everything better than negative thinking will”.
I was in a training class for entrepreneurs. Women’s Entrepreneur of Baltimore (WEB) gave small businesses the opportunity to start a business with a business plan. Within the first 3 years over 90% of businesses without business plans fail. WEB gave each entrepreneur the framework for the business plan that they would help design. WEB staff worked with each entrepreneur intensely to make certain they were covered in all aspect of business. One day we had a representative from Edwards Jones stock brokerage, by the name of Steven Reed. Steve was brought in to focus on financial plans and sales.
Steve appeared to be a really regular guy. He introduced himself to each one of us individually. He made certain to make personal cordial contact with each one of the class members. Steve was and excellent speaker and salesmen. On this day his topic was building up business through door to door sale. Now I figured there was no way that a middle age stock broker is going to tell me how going door to door doing sales made him rich. However, Steve said exactly that. Steven gets the bulk of his business now from referrals. However he got the bulk of his clients initially by going door to door and introducing himself. He met with people physically and personally and offer them his services if they ever needed it. He too had horror stories about door slammed in his face. Steven was a strong advocate of keeping positive and focused on a goal. Edward Jones stock brokers have a minimum of 25 doors that the average stock broker must knock on per day just to be in decent shape. That surprised me, but it also inspired me to say “If stock brokers can do it, I can do it too.”
In the classic sense I work with doors in many ways. When I was younger I sold doors door to door. Most doors were not open to me. I had to knock on each to get the opportunity to sell them on my idea. My idea at the time was that they could use our doors to improve their home. Some doors were opened. Many doors remained closed. I gained the gleeful attitude that every closed door led me to the next open door. My positive thinking propelled me to positive sales. Now I sell my business’ doors, kitchens, and bathrooms on a door to door person to person basis. I’m confident that I am providing a service people need, can rely upon, and will depend upon in the future.
I realize now that open doors have a lot to do with seizing your opportunity. Joel Osteen (author of many books including little book “30 thought for victorious living”) focuses on having positive energy throughout each opportunity. One factor that was connected between Zig Ziglar, Steven Reed, and Joel Osteen was their Faith. The each had a spiritual Faith and confidence that what they were doing was for a greater good. The basic premise was as a door closes you must also realize that soon there will be a new open door that is right for you.
Knowing that the open doors are around the corner is a learned trait for some. For others, they were born optimistic. I was and remain a born optimist. I hope that others too
