Ralph & Kacoo’s Restaurant dates back to 1969 when the first location opened up on False River. It quickly became a local favorite, and as the old saying goes, the popularity spread at the speed of an alligator snapping it’s jaws shut.
Ralph & Kacoo’s is a seafood restaurant chain located in Louisiana and Texas only. We are lucky and have two locations here in Baton Rouge, LA. They have recently opened up several restaurants in Texas.
Ralph & Kacoo’s is a favorite restaurant for a quiet dinner for two or for a group of friends and family. I have dined there too many times to count and can highly recommend the food and service. You won’t go home hungry or disappointed in the quality or quantity of food served.
Atmosphere & Decor
As you walk through the doors at Ralph & Kacoo’s you will be greeted with a huge stuffed and preserved alligator at the Bluebonnet location. Mr. Alligator is in honor of the popularity of the business spreading so rapidly. This thing is huge…at least 12-15 feet long and kids love to stand around and admire him! It is quite a conversation piece that leads to the small gift shop, “To Geaux” (pronounced GO) off to the left-hand side of the entrance. “To Geaux” contains Ralph & Kacoo items such as their famous sauces, mixes, cookbooks, gift baskets, and other unique “Louisiana” items.
The atmosphere is great here, pretty much laid back and very casual during lunch hours. Dinner is a bit more conservative but you will still see regulars going in with shorts on so “casual” takes precedence here. There are several separate dining rooms and each one has a unique theme. The one we dined in was decorated with wildlife trophies on the wall such as wild turkeys, deer heads, stuffed foxes, an ox, bear, squirrels and woodchucks, etc.
As you are escorted to your table or on your way out you will notice an extensive collection of old civil war guns and collectibles in the hall. . There are also large aquariums holding both saltwater and freshwater fish that is a popular attraction for guests to watch the fish or try to find them lurking behind coral.
Ralph & Kacoo’s specializes in cajun style seafood but also serves a decent steak if you are a “beef” person and not a seafood lover. The menu at Ralph & Kacoo’s has just about every kind of seafood you can imagine cooked either boiled, fried or broiled.
Your hostess will bring you complimentary hush puppies to your table upon seating. For those of you not familiar with this southern specialty, hush puppies are a seasoned corn bread batter deep fried. This is served instead of the normal fresh bread. Add a little butter and you have a delicious treat!
Appetizers available are some of your normal items you will find at other restaurants such as shrimp cocktail, shrimp remoulade, onion rings, stuffed mushrooms to the more unique southern flavor choices of fried crawfish tails, fried dill pickles, crab fingers or cajun popcorn. Appetizers are priced from $5.99 to $14.99 which is a full pound of peeled shrimp.
The lunch menu contains sandwiches, po-boys, and seafood dishes ranging from $6.50 to $10.99. You will find the famous Ralph & Kacoo’s “King Burger” on the lunch menu which is a full pound of meat dressed with your choice of toppings and french fries.
The dinner menu features seafood items that can be ordered as a main dish ($9.99) or a combination of two seafood items for $11.99. You also get a dinner salad, and choice of baked potato or french fries with each entree on the menu. They also have a huge seafood platter which is way more food than I can consume but worth the price of $19.99. Two people can easily share this platter and still have food left over!
Our group on our last visit ordered a range of food from a New York Strip Steak which was cooked as ordered. It was a quality cut, and very tender. The remaining members of our party all ordered seafood: fried fish, fried butterfly shrimp, fried crawfish and stuffed crabs. All of the seafood was prepared with a light cajun seasoned batter. The stuffed crab was on the spicy side, but I love it that way. Everyone enjoyed their meal and had no complaints about the food or service.
My husband and I love to order the seafood platter here. It is huge and enough food to have a full lunch the following day with the leftovers.
I have always received prompt and courteous service at the Bluebonnet Blvd. location in Baton Rouge, LA. The hostesses and wait staff are all very polite, courteous and professional. Wait time for tables and your food is within reason even when the restaurant is crowded. The number of employees seem to be adequate for the business. Our order on my latest visit was all served correctly for a party of 5 and our salads were served within 10 minutes of our order being taken.
Ralph & Kacoo’s also offers take out service for party trays. They can also serve up to 300 people at most locations for catered functions for parties and banquets.
This is a great family oriented restaurant. You will find reasonable prices, great food, friendly staff and an at-home atmosphere at Ralph & Kacoo’s . Don’t pass this place up if you get a chance to dine here “Cajun Style” and see for yourself why this restaurant was voted The Best Seafood in Louisiana!
