Redecorating Your Kitchen Country Style

by sumo nova

Turning your kitchen into a warm and inviting country kitchen can take some time and major changes. The hard part with this is it can get pricey depending on what you are already starting with. The pricey parts come in when you change the cabinets, flooring and fixtures in your kitchen. For the decorating touches most of those can be picked up cheaply at almost any flea market.

To add a country effect to your kitchen table just place a flower-patterned tablecloth on the table. Red and white-checkered patterns also work very well for this. Also add a Lazy Susan to the center of the table and fill with salt, pepper and other spices to finish this effect on your kitchen table.

Cedar cabinets are always a great way to go. Cedar not only will help you with that country look but will also aid in helping to keep bugs out. If you are allergic to cedar then just go with natural unfinished wood for the kitchen cabinets.

For the floors go with hard wood floors. The hard wood floors should be stained and finished with a gloss sealant to maintain a nice shine. The floors are one area where wood in its natural state will not work. To finish up the look place area rugs in front of the sink, stove and refrigerator. Southwestern designs or any old homey looking area rugs will work well for this.

The wood trim on the other hand should be left like the cabinets and be all natural wood. No staining or glossing should be applied to them when going for a country style kitchen.

Add curtains if your kitchen has windows, that are flower patterned to match your kitchen table. If you went with the red and white-checkered tablecloth you can go with red and white checkered curtains or just a solid red or white. Ruffles are always good when going with a country style so get curtains that have ruffles on them.

Your lighting and fixtures can also lend to the country look. When going with the country look in your kitchen lean toward installing vintage looking fixtures and lighting. These fixtures and lightings will have a dramatic effect on your country style kitchen.

To finish up your country kitchen you will need some decorations. If you kitchen has an island place some ice cream parlor stools with swivel round tops up to the counter. Hang cast iron skillets onto your wall for decoration. Also you can hang antique looking pots and pans from the ceiling over your sink or one of your counters using hooks.

Plants are always a good thing in the kitchen for adding a country effect. Place the plants on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. Placing them here will allow you a country effect and allow the plants much needed sun light. If you do not have a window over your kitchen sink you can still work plants into your kitchen décor. Just hang a shelf onto a wall and place small plants onto the shelf.
