During a fight at their Malibu home, actor Ryan O’Neal was arrested, and accused of assaulting his son with a handgun, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on Sunday.
Deputies went to the Ryan O’Neal home at 12:30 am on Saturday to determine whether or not the assault had happened. The deputies did determine that Ryan Oneal did assault his son, Griffin Oneal, during a family dispute that they were having, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
65-year-old Ryan O’Neal was accused of assault with a deadly weapon, and negligent discharge of a firearm. He was released on a 50,000 bond, after five hours of being in custody.
While at the Malibu Lost Hills Station, Peter Charbonneu said that the weapon used in the family dispute between the two, was a handgun, but was not sure how many shots were actually fired.
42 year old Griffin O’Neal was not injured as a result of the dispute with his father, although his 22 year old girlfriend suffered minor injuries(not due to the gunfire), and was treated at a hospital.
Representatives for Ryan O’Neal were unable to be reached for any comments regarding the assault.
Griffin O’Neal is the son Of Ryan O’Neal and his first wife, Joanna More. He is also the brother of actress Tatum O’Neal.
Griffin worked as an actor in the 80s and 90s, but had never attained the status of his father, who charmed the world with his boyish good looks as Oliver Barrett IV in the 1970s Movie “Love Story”.
Ryan O’Neal won an Oscar nomination for that role, and went on to star in movies such as, “Paper Moon”, and “Barry Lyndon”. Lately Ryan has been working in television.
He was diagnosed with a chronic, but treatable form of Leukemia, and had been subject in the news in the last year talking about his support for former long-time companion Farrah Fawcett in her own battle with cancer, who was just declared cancer-free last week.
The father and son had always had a rocky relationship, and Griffin has had problems with the law, and substance abuse.
According to the celebrity website TMZ.com, Griffin served 18 days in jail for not doing community service after a judge found him guilty for reckless boating in 1986. This incident ended up killing Francis Ford Coppola’s eldest son.
He also was involved in a drunken driving charge in 1989, and agreed to one year in rehab in 1992. He also shot at his estranged girlfriend’s car, which was unoccupied at the time, TMZ.com said.
Ryan O’Neal was born on April 20, 1941, as Patrick Ryan O’Neal. He was born in Los Angeles, California to an Irish-American screenwriter, Charles O’Neal. His mother is actress Patricia Callaghan.
Ryan O’Neal’s first shot at stardom occurred on the soap opera “Peyton Place”.
He was married to Joanna More and Leigh Taylor-Young, and mentioned earlier, in a longterm relationship with Farrah Fawcett. He has four children: Tatum and Griffin O’Neal(with Joanna More), Patrick O’Neal with Leigh Taylor-Young,and Redmond O’Neal.
