I have complied some Senior activities in Hickory North Carolina, and surrounding areas. I became interested in this when my grandmother moved in with my mother. She is in poor health and can’t really get out much. But I know a lot of seniors in Catawba county can be and want to be active. The problem is finding them something to do. And shame on you if you have an elderly parent or relative and you don’t do anything in your power to keep them active. Physical activity helps keep the mind sharp as well, and people deserve to enjoy themselves in their later years. Getting seniors involved in things makes them feel needed and wanted, we all need that. The more active they are, the healthier they tend to be.
According to several articles on the AARP site, walking is just about the best thing in the world for anyone. It releases hormones and endorphins into the body, these actually relieve pain. Also the walking makes you think in a more clear fashion. They say it can even clear the mind enough to solve problems and have creative ideas. And of course the walking is good exercise and very helpful in losing weight.

YMCA Walking Tracks
I go to the one in Conover to do my walking. The tracks are fun to walk on and you get the pleasure of being outside. The YMCA has several branches in Catawba County, and they all have programs for Seniors to get involved with. The programs include health and fitness, volunteering, swimming, and social clubs. Each branch has it’s own programs.
Catawba County Parks.
There are several public parks in Catawba County. Walking there on tracks or on nature trails is a very popular. Riverbend park on hwy 16 is a great one, because you are down on the river. This is right before Oxford Dam if you are coming from Conover.
Catawba County Libraries.
The various branches of the library have a lot to offer. They can check and see if there are any volunteer reading programs for kids. They can also access the internet if they so desire and also of course check out books or audio books. They can sit there and read a book or magazine and socialize with their friends.
Most churches offer programs for senior activities. My other grandmother used to ride the bus, and play bingo, attend movies, and visit friends in nursing homes. These were all things she did with her church. Plus being involved in a church tends to bring peace of mind to some seniors. Find a good church and see what they have to offer.
There are plenty of places to fish in the area. Lake Hickory, Lake Lookout, The Catawba River and many creeks and streams. Fishing is a relaxing way to get outside and enjoy nature. If you are interested in Catawba County bank fishing spots that are easily accessible for seniors, email me at Randync5@aol.com and put fishing in the subject line. I will be happy to share my list of spots. Heck I will even go with you if you so desire, as I love to fish myself.
