Here are some things to look for when considering living in Los Angeles as a senior.
Let’s be honest, cost is a major issue when planning your retirement location. The best thing to do is sit down with calculator in hand and find a website that has a cost of living program on it. Only you know what you can spend on living expenses.
A great little website is swz.salary.com. They are able to give you the comparison between two cities. For example if you are coming from San Jose, California and moving to Los Angeles, California, you will be happy to know that the cost of rent is 15% lower.
There are some great places to living in Los Angeles. You just have to research them.
There are some great senior apartments in Los Angeles, California. Of course you will want a place that is clean and compatible to your lifestyle. When I did a search, I found senior apartments all over Los Angeles. Many offer staff that are compassionate and care about your lifestyle.

If farmer markets are your thing, the downtown farmers market opens every morning at 4am and closes around 10am. You can buy anything from beef to roses during these hours. Los Angeles also has a farmer’s market on 3rd and Fairfax that is open daily.
Don’t forget to dine at one of the local diners while shopping. There is Kokomo which seems to be a celebrity favorite and Dupar’s. I’ve personally eaten in Dupar’s several times and the food is good and reasonable.
Los Angeles has the biggest park I have ever seen. Griffith Park is the largest urban park in North America. It is host to great attractions like the Griffith Park Observatory. You can take a drive up to the Observatory and enjoy the great view over the city of Los Angeles. You can also learn a great deal about astronomy.
If hiking is your thing, Griffith Park has nearly 4500 acres of hiking trails. There are many hiking groups that meet at Griffith Park. You can hike into Griffith Park and see the old zoo or you could hike up to the Hollywood sign and feel like a star. We also have a newer zoo that features animals from around the world.
If you like western history, Griffith Park is host to the Gene Autry Western Heritage Museum. This is a great place to look at western artwork and view some of the Indian Pow Wow’s that they have around the year.
If you love horse like I do, you can head over to the Equestrian center. Not only can you rent horses to ride in Griffith Park but the Equestrian center is host to several competitions each year.
At Traveltown, one can ride on a miniature railroad operated by the Los Angeles Live Steamers and see retired railroad locomotives, passenger cars and street cars from bygone eras.
You can can attend concerts under the stars at the magnificent Greek Theatre, which was built to resemble a Greek amphitheater.

Let’s not forget what Hollywood, part of Los Angeles, is famous for. The glamor of movies and televisions. All the studios have tickets to view an airing of your favorite television show.
Your probably wondering how your going to get around to all these events. Not to worry, Los Angeles has the biggest transportation department that I have ever seen. You can get to the middle of Griffith Park by bus. You can get to the beach by lightrail or bus.
We have busses that will drop you in front of major department stores and a lightrail that will drop you right in front of Universal Studios Theme park.
If you want to visit Hollywood. Just simply take the red train (lightrail) to the Vine stop. You will be dropped off a couple blocks from Mann’s Chinese theater and other great places to spend your time.
