On any given weekday, millions of people are tuned in to hear Maury Povich say those five little words that have become a staple in modern American pop culture; “You are NOT the father!” We may find the show entertaining but we must remember that these children in question are the products of dysfunctional adults and the pawns in a sick ratings race by the shows producers. When it comes down to it, these children are the ones who will suffer in the long run. Nothing beneficial can come out of the display of a young mother testing 5 or more men to determine who fathered her baby, this is something that will have a long lasting effect on the child.
The Maury Povich Show does raise the question: should paternity testing be mandatory? If there is a requirement of paternity testing before the man signs the birth certificate, it would cut down on alot of future heartache. For example, the father and his loved ones will not be in for the shock of their lives when they find out that the child that they cared for, loved and financially supported for 18 years is not theirs. Also this gives some women the chance take more responsibility for their actions. No longer will lies be able to hurt so many lives in the long run.
It is unfair that a man has to pay for a child that is not his, regardless of paternity a husband is still required by law to support the children conceived during the marriage.
So often were hear about women rights, and dead beat dads BUT what about the men who want to be responsible and do the right thing? Where are the rights for these men? Along with mandatory paternity testing their should be a mandatory law stating that the woman should pay back the child support she received over how ever long period the time due to the fact that the child/children are not his.
What it all boils down too is both parties needing to take responsibility for their actions. Women have to be more cautious in deciding who they have sex with and of course use birth control. The same goes for men, when you practice safe sex you will not encounter the so called baby momma drama. Here’s a reminder in case you forgot: CONDOMS ARE NOT ONLY USED FOR PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASES! They are also crucial in preventing unwanted pregnancies.
Here are a few resources for the rights of men regarding the issues of paternity:
