I traded in Guitar Hero 2 for Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007. One plus with that trade is my feet will not swell from standing up for hours and rocking out.
As a fan of wrestling games I will always buy the new one out. I have come to realize that they will never make the perfect wrestling game. If they did the companies would not make money off it’s successor.
Is Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007 an improvement over 06? A little bit yeah.
General Manager mode is expanded. You now have the ability to turn off injuries and you can also have unlimited money. You now have a myriad of storylines to feud your superstars in. One downside is you cannot use some of the legends(Tazz, Lawler, and Shane McMahon) in GM mode. GM Mode continues forever, at the end of one year Vnce McMahon declares a GM of the year. If you lose he doesn’t fire you, you continue on.
Create a Wrestler took away from CAW mode, but to make up for that more was added to Create An Entrance. Now you can decide when to use the fireworks. You are also able to change the camera angle. All the create modes are fine, except for create a title again. They have added spinner belts, but tat ugly centerpiece still makes the title look atrocious.
Playing this game you will experience it’s many glitches. The game play makes up for that with it’s new innovative grappling system. Many of the glitches just make me giggle instead of throwing my controller across the room. This go around you use the analog sticks to move and grapple. I thought I would hate this system, but I picked it up quickly. You can always change the settings and use the old format. The new grappling system is one thing I enjoy about the game. Using R3 you have some other moves, for instance if you have a chokeslam as R3 you can pick up your opponent, walk them around the ring, then slam them out of it. In this game you can chokeslam people off the Hell in a Cell and through a table.
The legends are fine except for Dusty Rhodes. First you have his “Common Man” theme song, but he’s not fat, nor does he have polka dot trunks. This Dusty is one most gamers are not familiar with. He isn’t even NWA era Dusty, more of a Stardust before that. Possibly as a heel that teamed with Dick Murdoch if you will. No black hernia fat roll? That ain’t Dusty. If you have a Action Replay Max or similar cheat device you can unlock Vince and Stephanie McMahon, as well as the crew of referees and announcers, Lillian Garcia included.
There are now interactive hotspots in the ring and arena. You can crotch your opponent on the rope, crack his arm across the ring post, ram their head into the ring steps and various other tormenting moves. This is great for the game as it gives you many options for offense. You can even take a sign from a fan and rip it up.
Career mode is nothing special once again. Same ol’ same ol’. Especially using a CAW, you will just find yourself being traded back and forth from Smackdown to Raw. The only real purpose to play this mode is to garner experience points. Playing with a superstar will garner you character specific storylines, but that will get old to you too.
Superstar challenge I find useless as well. It’s not fun, it’s just a job to unlock the few remaining unlock-ables. Again I advise getting a cheat device, it will allow you to unlock everything, that way you don’t have to waste hours you could be using playing the game on unlocking worthless items. Cool unlockables include the ECW One Night Stand and Saturday Night Main Event arenas.
With friends, exhibition mode is fine, perhaps the best feature of the game is title match. I find myself having title match mania with the various Championships. This is the mode you will most often play and it is solid. Every match is available in exhibition or title mode. There are a few more match types than last year.
If you are not a wrestling fan do not buy this game. Wrestling fans will know how to have fun with it, but the casual fan will grow bored quickly. This is not a game that will appeal to the action gaming fan, rather it is for the casual to hardcore wrestling fan.
I continue to play the game sporadically. Mainly just to anger my human opponent by dry humping them with Viscera. For all the negatives with this game it’s still fun to beat people up, as myself. Overall the game is a step up but could have been much better, it is pretty much Smackdown vs. Raw 2006.5
