Recently people in Las Vegas were able to vote on an the Nevada Clean Indoor Act, which bans smoking in bars that serve meals, convenience stores, supermarkets, and put restrictions on many other businesses.
The Voter approved ban was challenged but it was put into place recently and now alot of bar owners are saying they will have to fire some workers and shut down the food service part of their bars. Other’s are ignoring the ban altogether, one bar owner was on T.V. saying he would put out signs telling his customers that they can’t smoke inside the bar but if they decided to smoke he would say nothing to them.
The ban now covers most all public places except in Casinos and bars that don’t serve food. The Health District is in charge of The Clean Air Act and even though they say they have no intentions of enforcing the law to the extent of throwing people in jail, they do want the smokers fined $100.00 if caught. Unless the businesses themselves are held accountable they aren’t going to comply with this new Ban, neither are they going to enforce it. Many people have said that violators are still smoking in places they are banned from doing so, but no one is stopping them. Some local bars and restaurants are still allowing smoking even thought they know it’s now against the law.
Casino gaming floors, strip bars and standalone bars are exempt from this new ban. My thoughts on this are based on the fact that I’m a non-smoker and always have been. I don’t think I should have to be subjected to smokers second hand smoke every time I go shopping or decide to eat in a restaurant or bar. They may have had smoking areas and non-smoking areas in restaurants but we all know second hand smoke goes where it wants and just because I am sitting three tables away from someone who smokes doesn’t mean their second hand smoke isn’t getting over to me where I would like to breathe clean air.
While major casinos are exempt for this ban for now, many think it could be paving the road for larger bans on smoking in the future. I personally don’t think a ban on smoking will ever get passed for the large hotels because they hold so much clout and they bring in so much money for the town.
With the cost of cigarettes being what they are and smokers knowing that it’s bad for them, it causes cancer. Why would you choose to smoke in the first place? I don’t have the answers but at least I won’t have to breathe their second hand smoke when I go shopping or go to the bar to have some chicken fingers and play video poker.
