In focusing solely on the alternative ’80s music genre, Generation 80s Retro Radio has clocked over 6,000,000 listening hours in just over five years. Currently, Generation 80s Retro is known as one of the most independent and non-corporate radio station because of that large achievement. It is also the number 1 alternative station on its network, Live365, and has been for 4 years.
Java Jane started Generation ’80s Retro in the summer of 2001, with the intent of simply creating an archive for an extensive alternative 80s collection of mp3s for friends to enjoy and experience some sought after 80s nostalgia. Humble beginnings would eventually turn into a successful internet radio within a few months of being on air.
Around the four month of being on, things truly began to pick up for the alternative 80s station, being named an editor’s pick and being recognized by Arbitron, which tracks and record radio ratings and other media research information.
In 2004, the success seemed to come to a head with the station being awarded “Best Alternative Stream.”
However, all internet radio streams took a bit by the RIAA, which brought on several fees for webcasters and the Live365 network became a pay service.
As directly taken from Java Jane’s description of Generation 80s Retro Radio, it is:
“NOT a “top 40″ retro radio station, although a good many of the songs did grace the top 40 charts. Instead this broadcast attempts to recreate the magic of the leaders in 80’s progressive alternative radio stations like Los Angeles” kRoQ|kNaC, San Diego”s 91X and and NYC”s wLiR|wDrE as well others like it across the country.
Remember Richard Blade, Poor Man, Jed the Fish, Malibu Sue, Donna Donna, Willoby and the “Screamer of the Week”? Listening to “Generation80s” you will hear the web”s best mix of New Wave, Synthpop, Dark Wave, New Romantics, MoDeRn RoCk, Brit Pop and Alternative Club Classics from the ultra popular to the obscure, spanning approximately 1979 – 1992 with a few “surprises” now and again for good measure.”
Java Jane also proved to be an intelligent webcaster and is very loyal and aware to her fans and fans of the station. Thanks and praise for the past five years are wide and far reaching and it is obvious that she feels obligated to keep up the radio for the sake of the fans and her love of the music.
