My bride of eight years has shown me the beauty of a sunset when observed with a special friend. I’ve heard of sunsets called the beauty God gives us to create hope fer the upcomin’ day. I also have read several opinions statin’ it is the beauty that God gives us to enhance the wonders of the night. I’ll tell ya of two special sunsets we’ve observed and you judge which way is the truth fer you.
One of our first sunsets was on the beach near Naples Florida. It had been the second long day in a small car drivin’ from Ohio to the Sunshine State. We’re not young but not old yet either so this was a bit of an endurance drive fer us. The trip was a learnin’ experience fer us since we had just began to learn about each others personality quirks, likes and dislikes, etc. We were the guests of a special friend that worked winters in Florida and summers in Ohio. Chris was workin’ this night but gave us directions to one of the great public beach areas.
Bonnie had maneuvered the little red Ford into a parkin’ area just in time to git the last empty spot. I grabbed a blanket from the boot and we headed toward the Gulf. We were at that stage of our relationship that even though we were surrounded by other sunset afficionados we felt we were alone. The cool on shore breeze relaxed us after our day’s travel. The warm sand caressed our bare feet. That special feelin’ between lovers was brinin’ a glow into our souls.
The sun was slidin’ into the gulf. We watched it ever so gently dippin’ into the deep azure water as if we were in a trance. The moment was shattered by applause. Yes I said applause. The entire beach full of hundreds of folks all givin’ the sunset a standin’ ovation. It was an emotional event that is hard to describe. It felt as if the passion of beauty had been awakened within us.
We returned to our lodgin’ place after stoppin’ fer some food. The hot shower was stimulain’ and relaxin’ simultaneously. The cool satin sheets enhanced the beauty of a special night. We drifted off with dreams of this wondrous day and all the beauty that God had given us to enjoy.
As joy filled as this sunset was it doesn’t compare to the sunset over Lake Erie. We’ve witnessed it frequently since it is near home. Our favorite place to catch this event is at The Catawba Island State Park. The many memories we have of this place there is one that stands out.
It was a lazy Sunday late afternoon when Bonnie sez “Let’s have a picnic and a sunset. We need a little of God’s special beauty to uplift our spirits.” The week before had been one of those weeks that challenged our spiritual growth and positive attitudes. There was a little road side place that sells fresh Lake Erie Perch sandwiches and some great coleslaw so we had an instant picnic.
We found a park bench on the edge of the pier facin’ West. We could see the beginin’ of the parade of folks returnin’ after a day of sailin’ on the lake. There were several young folks playin’ on jet skis. Near the edge of the pier was a mother Mallard and her brood lookin’ fer a handout. The Cokes were ice cold and the sandwiches were excellent. I had my best girl snuggled close, there was a gentle warm on shore breeze and we knew we were about to receive a special blessin’ from God.
Things became very quiet as this special event began to unfold. It was almost as if the great conductor had raised his baton. The quiet symphony had begun. The royal blue sky was releasin’ it’s hold on the golden glob of life. Gently slidin’ into the cool waters of this great lake a new night was beginin’.
Across the inlet is the Catawba Island Club. They were havin’ a dance and just as the sun slipped out of sight the orchestra stuck up the “Star Spangled Banner”. What delightful way to end a thing of beauty. We gathered our paper trash and started towards the car. As we deposited the discards into a trash barrel the band started our special song. “Strangers in the Night” My special queen grabbed me and whispered in my ear “Dance as if nobody’s watchin’.” so we did. Yes sir right in the middle of the pier in front of God and everyone that was watchin. I lightly kissed her cheek as the tune finished when the whole pier erupted into applause. There was again hope fer a better day !
I’m sure we will share many more sunsets in years to come. These are two of our memories that have made sunsets special to us. You decide whether a sunset is the end of the day or the beginin’ of the night. It doesn’t matter to us we’ll enjoy every one of them just because they’re beautiful.
