Whenever I find myself in the Tacoma area, I make a point of stopping by Tacoma Boys for a nice reprieve from the hectic everyday activities. You just need to drive along the I-5 corridor in Tacoma and see the huge ‘Tacoma Boys’ sign beckoning everyone with the ‘red hot deals’. Luckily, this storefront is very visible from the I-5 corridor. And, it is easy access on and off the freeway. The huge poster board is very eye appealing and easy to read. It is easy to tell that if you are interested in coming to this market, you need to take the freeway exit coming up. Tacoma Boys does a great job in enticing customers in this respect.
From the freeway, the sign gives the impression that this place is a produce market. Upon entering the store’s area, however, I could tell it was much more. It is a full-fledged grocery highlighting unique and local products. I love going into this market.
The parking lot here is ample. Plus, it is of a size where I don’t have to put on my walking shoes to get inside. It is large enough to handle the traffic, yet small enough to be in close range of the entrance.
The storefront itself is attractive with a variety of gardening plants ranging from fresh herbs to flowered plants along the entranceway. This is a very welcoming site. Signs containing product names and prices are easy to read and hand-written.
The fresh produce area is reminiscent of a local upscale farm. There is no prepackaged produce in this attractively displayed area. Even the iceberg lettuce is not wrapped in a plastic bag. Everything in this section is well-labeled, with the signs being hand written. This adds to the homey feeling of this section. Plus, each produce variety is contained within individual produce boxes. The display/holding boxes are continually maintained to put the produce in the most costumer friendly arrangement (usually rows).
Once inside the open front walkway, cheeses and cut flowers greeted me. Sometimes there are samples of cheeses. It is nice to be able to taste new cheeses prior to purchasing them. The variety here is immense.
Then, along the wall is the packaged baked items, grains, frozen local fruit – also all presented in an atmosphere reminiscent of a local upscale farm. There are a variety of toppings here, also. It’s just great.
Tacoma Boys even has a wine collection boasting 2000 varieties. It’s fun to peruse this area. They carry many local Washington wines. In fact, it’s so diverse there is even a Wine Expert available to assist you.
If the produce, cheese, baked items, and wine collection is not enough, Tacoma Boys also has a meat and department. This area reminds me of a butcher shop. Meats and seafood look very fresh, are reasonably priced, and the employees are always a joy to talk with.
Tacoma Boys carries Vernors (ginger ale). This is the only place I have seen sell it outside of Michigan. That fact alone (plus the fresh produce!) has me hooked on this market.
Oh, I forgot to mention the variety of hot sauces, gourmet olive bar, prepackaged dehydrated foods, and nuts. This place is just way too cool and fun to be in.
Great atmosphere, tremendous variety, helpful service, and reasonable prices – it is all here. Tacoma Boys is a fantastic place.
