General Motors caught the attention of millions of Super Bowl 2007 television viewers with scenes of shirtless men in their underwear creating a car wash frenzy in the middle of a city street. Even more interesting, is the fact that a group of college students created this commercial and won the award for the Chevy College Ad Challenge.
The GM: Car Wash Dudes Super Bowl 2007 commercial is one of the most unique Super Bowl commercials because it features half-clothed men, rather than women, to advertise the product. This particlular commercial combined sexy and funny with a variety of men showcasing their briefs.
The commercial begins with a group of women in a Chevy, driving down a city street while they chat with each other. When the first man approaches the car, one of the women suggests that the driver, “give him a dollar.” In true stripper style, the man takes the offer with his teeth and begins to feel his love Chevy cars, while he strips down to his underwear.
The carwash frenzy begins, as the music pipes in, “It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes…” Men on the street seem to catch the Chevy carwash fever, and pretty soon the car is surrounded by dozens of men in briefs trying to get a piece of the Chevy carwash action.
There are some eye catching men in this commercial. At one point, one of the women covers her eyes after an overjoyed, skinny old man appears at the car window. The infamous man in the cowboy hat and boots to match his white underwear, stands out, as well as a guy riding a horse. All of these men add something to the commercial.
Even though there are dozens of men stripped down to their underwear in this commercial, the tone of the commercial is not sexually driven. The funky music and the sheer chaos going on around one Chevy car make it much more humorous than sexy. Compared to the Snickers: Kiss Super Bowl commercial, this commercial is rated PG.
The creators of the GM: Carwash Dudes Super Bowl 2007 commercial had a winning formula for the Chevy College Ad Challenge, and I believe that this commercial captures all the elements that make a memorable commercial. The theme is original and the advertisement weaves the product promotion around an eye catching commercial that doesn’t lose focus of the selling point.
The GM: Carwash Dudes commercial is a Super Bowl 2007 hit. Some parents may want to keep younger children from viewing this commercial, but there are few adult themes, other than the grown men parading in their underwear in a carwash frenzy.
