The Grille at Park Circle, listed in the Washington County, MD local restaurant directory (pages.washingtoncounty.com/dining/grille.htm), is one of my favorite locally owned restaurants in Hagerstown, MD. It has become a frequent dining choice for me and my family over the years for many reasons. The restaurant is in an excellent location, the food is great, the atmosphere is cozy, and everyone is ready to serve your dining wishes. The best thing is that the prices are reasonable for high quality food.
The Grille is in an excellent location in Hagerstown, right by the City Park. You could take a walk through the park and enjoy the scenery, such as the lake with ducks and swans, before dining. The children could play on the seesaw and swings to build their appetites. Or, you could leave your dining experience at the Grille and visit the park after dark, taking a moonlit stroll around the water. The Grille at Park Circle is also centrally located, close to downtown Hagerstown and thus nearby to many attractions and shopping areas.
Nearby attractions include:
1. The Prime Outlets (http://primeoutlets.com/cntrdefault.asp?cntrid=1026) in Hagerstown is just about two miles away, a great discount shopping area.
2. The popular Valley Mall is about two miles from the Grille (shopthevalleymall.com).
3. The Maryland Theatre (mdtheatre.org)is less than a mile away, with some great evening entertainment ideas.
4. The Cancun Cantina, a country-western bar featuring top bands on the weekends, is about three miles away (cancuncantinawest.com).
The food at the Grille speaks for itself. This restaurant has some of the best high quality and original food I have eaten anywhere, and I have eaten alot of places! THe menu has a wide selection, including crabcakes, baby back ribs, filet mignon, cajun and tequila chicken, and pasta dishes. When visiting on a holiday, there is a set menu, so be sure to inquire about this ahead. I went there for Valentine’s day and was pleasantly surprised. One of the offerings on the set menu that day was a chicken and sausage pasta with a red sauce that was incredible!
On a regular basis, I would recommend as an appetizer the crab meat over top of waffle fries. The crab meat is some of the best I have had. For a dinner entree, you have to try the bbq baby back ribs. The bbq sauce has an original flavor, and the meat just falls off the bones and is juicy and tender. For dessert, pick anything chocolate! They used to have a chocolate muffin with hot fudge sauce inside that was heated and served with ice cream- order this if they still have it!
The Grille has a full bar serving beer, wine and cocktails.
The Grille at Park Circle has very reasonable prices as well. I usually order a half rack of ribs, that comes with a salad, vegetable and side of pasta. This costs about $12! The prices for the steak and crabcakes are average for the Hagerstown area, and range from $13 to $26 (for a crab and steak dinner). Other entrees range $10 to $20. The appetizers are around $7-$10, with desserts rounding out at about $4 to $6.
As for the setting and service, this is a top reason to visit and encounter the unique dining experience. The setting is different, depending on where you sit. You can sit in the bar area, which has dining tables, and watch a sporting event and/or socialize with friends. This area is louder, and bustling with activity generally. Or, you can choose the more romantic “non-smoking” section. The lights are dim and the ambience is relaxed and cozy. This area is great for a Friday night date. Additionally, this side works well for a small family dinner or business meeting. There is also a small room in the back for parties and events, with a door for added privacy. What is nice about the whole setting is the decoration involved. You may be sitting right beside an old trumpet hanging on the wall, or some other antique item. Most of the items remind you of the 60’s and 70’s, and of what life was like back in the day. I quite enjoy looking at all the historical things hanging on the walls.
The service is very pleasant. All the waiters and waitresses are nice and helpful, and as attentive as possible. Sometimes the place gets really busy, like holidays and weekends, but the servers do their best to still provide excellent service. You may have to wait a few minutes to be greeted and served your first beverage if it’s really busy. However, with everything I’ve mentioned above, added to the smiling faces, it is always worth the wait.
Overall, I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant. There aren’t too many thriving local restaurants anywhere anymore, with all of the food chains that abound. I would support this place just because it is the only one like it of its kind. I have never had to complain about my food here- it always comes out the way I ordered it and high quality. The mood is awesome for a first or third or tenth date or even wedding anniversary, the people are nice, and the prices are reasonable. There isn’t much more you could ask for in a nice restaurant!
