The Power of God’s Word: Journaling Prompts for Writing About Spiritual Beliefs

by sumo nova

Hebrews 1:1-3 – “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, (2) has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (3) who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high…”

The Word: Two words are translated “word” in the Bible:
Logos – The word incarnate
Rhema – God’s powerful spoken word

~ Let’s examine six ways the word of God has power.

1) Power of God’s Word to Create
Hebrews 1:2 “through whom also He made the worlds” Remember that Jesus IS the word of God in fleshly form. 1 John 1:1 says that the Word (Logos) created everything that exists and has ever existed. While I cannot create something from nothing, I can be creative in so many ways, and reflect God’s character by doing so.

2) Power of God’s Word to Sustain
Hebrews 1:3 “upholding all things by the word of His power” (Rhema) God upholds and sustains me in so many ways. I don’t have to have the ability to sustain myself because God is in control.

3) Power of God’s Word to Purify for Sins
Heb 1:3 “when He had by Himself purged our sins”. It was through Jesus, the Word incarnate, that purification for sins came. His last spoken words on the cross were “it is finished” and with that proclamation came the end to sins hold on my life.

4) Power of God’s Word to Reign
Heb 1:3 “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” The Word shows us the sovriegnty of Jesus, the exact representation of God. With this knowledge I can come directly to the Lord “making my requests known to Him.” What a joy it is to “come boldly”.

5) Power of God’s Word to Save
Romans 1:16 speaks of God’s word being the “power of God unto salvation”. Such an amazing gift, that the Word of God can enact the greatest change in someone’s life.

6) Power of God’s Word to Work
Heb 2:4 “Bearing witness through the working in our lives according to His own will”. When the Lord saves you, you become a jar of clay to His disposal. Not to do and think as you wish. This was a tough one for me to hear….We are to listen to God’s directions in our lives.

As a Christian I do have the Power of God’s Word in my life through Jesus (Logos), the word of God as man.
