Okay, Ryan Seacrest used to be the most annoying person on American Idol. Many people might have thought it was Simon Cowell, but in reality he just couldn’t match the level of annoyances Seacrest created for the fans. Well, Ryan is playing second fiddle this season. The most annoying person on the show is one of the contestants. It’s Sanjaya Malakar. At one point I actually felt sorry for him as a pawn in the battle between the producers of American Idol, and a group of webmasters that have created a site called votefortheworst.com. Originally it appeared that Sanjaya was a little ashamed of the popularity he was getting from everyone voting for him despite his singing being, well at best it is bad. That statement is obviously an understatement and you would realize it if you have been watching the show.
The issue now though is that Sanjaya is starting to revel in his new found safety from being the pick of that website and other fans that think it would be entertaining to see him win and make a mockery of the show. Did you see his hair for the pop week? That had to be the most pathetic thing I have ever seen on television, I mean it’s even worse than Donald Trump’s hair! It has gotten so bad, Simon even commented on that week’s show that the judges comments no longer really matter anymore, and that Sanjaya was “in his own universe”. Simon doesn’t realize how true his words are, or maybe he does.
American Idol is in real danger of losing a large amount of it’s popularity, if this farce continues. The issue will become more apparent at the next few weeks pass in the contest. There are still a few weaker contestants that will probably be eliminated before Sanjaya’s presence becomes tragic. Haley, Chris Richardson, and Phil Stacey will all probably go without a lot of protest. But, then if Sanjaya remains one of the favorites will be eliminated by his remaining on the show. This would be one from a collection of Lakisha Jones, Jordin Sparks, Gina Glocksen, Blake Lewis, and Melinda Doolittle. If one of those contestants out of that group are eliminated from making the final five and Sanjaya makes it, fan reaction may change from frustrated to just plain mad. You can see it in the judges already, that transformation. It was apparent with Simon the week that Stephanie Edwards got voted off, and watching the body language of the other judges during pop week, they aren’t as vocal but can see the writing on the wall.
Will there be changes coming in future seasons? That will depend on how far Sanjaya advances and what happens to the more talented contestants. Maybe Fox will pick up on the idea of “Rock Star” where the fans choose the bottom three and then the judges decide who goes home? Maybe there will be weighted voting with the fans and judges each having a say? Who knows, but in the end the producers of the show can not afford to watch their show fall apart in front of their eyes just because some “fans” think it would be funny to have the worst singer on the show win. Just imagine if this happened the year William Hung was on it? American Idol would not be on the air anymore in my opinion if that had happened.
