The first step is to cut down on the clutter, since over the years we all have accumulated a massive amount of junk that we do not really need. Now take a few boxes and garbage bags and go through the stuff lying around your house. The boxes can be for things that you want to give away, the garbage bags for the trash, and leave yourself one small bin of things that you want to keep per room. Everything that you decide to keep in your home should be something that you regularly use or that every house has to have. In order to make your space work for you, it is necessary to let go of your things so that they can in turn let go of you. You can let your friends and family go through any unneeded objects before dropping off the rest of the junk at a local thrift shop. Of course, you can also sell these things on Ebay if they are in good condition or try setting up a neighborhood yard sale.
The second step is to display any collection type items that you want to keep in a well-lit uncluttered way. You can find different types of shadow boxes, shelving options or display cases to show off your collection in a meaningful way. If you cannot come up with a way to display it then you should probably let it go, collections have to be enjoyed not collect dust in a box. If you decide to get rid of the collection get it appraised so that you know what it is all worth. You can sell these to other collectors, or give them to a friend to display for you at their home. For example my collection of glass dolls is on loan to one of my younger sisters until she tires of them or I ask for them back. This way they are on display and are in safekeeping.
Then the next step is to use flexible storage to keep things looking neat and organized. You can use bins and shoe boxes as a temporary storage for any thing you will not need immediately. If you find yourself running out of places to store your things you might need to think about getting your closet redesigned. If you head over to the container store, you can get a whole bunch of ideas for storing all of your stuff.
The final step is to keep your place as clutter free as possible. While this might sound hard just try to stick to a few simple rules of living an uncluttered life every day. Never touch a piece of paper more then once, buy a new object, but get rid of another and always put things back where they belong. If you have a piece of mail in your hand, you should open it and decide to shred, or file and do it right away. Then the next rule means that if you go out and buy a new knick-knack you can decide to get rid of another. To follow the third rule will be the hardest habit to make, but in the end, you will be living happier in a much less cluttered space.
