If you listen to the “smart” wrestling fans, or smarks, you would believe WWE is the worst wrestling promotion that has ever existed. However that is far from the truth. The WWE is the world leader in sports entertainment, and the main reason is their talented roster. Sure, the wacky storylines may leave a lot to be desired, but the talent is where it’s at. This article will focus on the RAW brand.
For starters take a look at the WWE Champion John Cena. Cena is being built just like his predecessors Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, and The Rock. Out of the four of them Cena is possibly the bottom of the rung when it comes to mic skills and in-ring skills(he is on Hogan’s level here), but he does have charisma. Cena is being cheered again, even those who booed him are coming around. He is not quite seasoned but in due time he will rise to the occasion. John Cena will become this generations Hogan.
Degeneration X returned and now seems on the shelf due to the injury to Triple H. One person the smarks like to pick on is Triple H, citing the fact that he gets the push, the titles, because he is the son-in-law of Vince McMahon. Hunter is one of the top three workers in the world today when he is healthy. He has the three, the look, mic skills, and in-ring ability. DX can still work if the WWE doesn’t want to drop it, and bringing in the New Age Outlaws would be a great way to milk the D-X reunion for all it’s worth.
Shawn Michaels is perhaps the best worker around. He only gets better with age. His hairline may be starting to fade but his quickness and agility has not. He tells a story in the ring like no other, works the crowd to a fever pitch, and delivers night in and night out.
Ric Flair in my opinion is the greatest wrestler ever. It is amazing for a man 60 years old to still be able to keep up with the young bucks. Sure, his matches may all be the same, but just like Shawn Michaels he can tell a story, and can carry a broomstick to a great match. How much is left in the tank of Ric Flair? As an in-ring competitor the clock is ticking. But long after he “retires” I expect Ric to still be around, guiding the next generation of WWE Superstars to the top of the profession.
With the retirements of Lita and Trish Stratus you would expect the Women’s Division to suffer. Losing two of the better working women is a loss, but the WWE is still fine. Mickie James and Victoria can carry the load. Both are good in the ring. Mickie James is just hot. And I am recently enjoying Victoria’s rump. Maria can’t wrestle worth a lick but I do like to see her crawl across the mat. What do you expect? This is the Women’s Division. The fans don’t care about the quality of the match, they just want to see a little skin. Melina is another performer who will soon come into her own in-ring wise, so the division will not be hurting for actual quality matches in the future.
The tag team division isn’t as bad as it was. Rated RKO are the tag team champions, which isn’t a bad idea. With Triple H out I would expect more tag title defenses against the likes of Cryme Tyme and the Highlanders. Cade and Murdoch just can’t get over with the crowd. I would suggest adding Dusty Rhodes to the fray. He could advise the young Texans and lead them to the promise land. Or just manage Trevor Murdoch in an awkward reformation of Rhodes and Murdoch. Cryme Tyme is the breakout team in the division. They are already over with the crowd, and even though they work a gimmick that might turn off a few I really enjoy it.
The rest of the RAW roster is just fine. Jeff Hardy has returned and promptly regained his spot as one of the most popular superstars in the brand. His high risk style provides the action that the fans of today crave. Plus he gets the teeny-bopper pop. Johnny Nitro is coming along, he has a great look, albeit a metro sexual one. Umaga is working fine as the monster heel, his feud with Cena should be enough to solidify him as an upper tier superstar.
Overall the RAW brand is looking fine. You can complain all you want about the WWE, but they have the world’s best talent. Do they use their talent like they should? That is another story, for another day.
