My 2 year contract with Verizon was up last month, and I wasn’t planning to get a new phone. I knew that even though I had a discount coming to me, I’d probably end up spending money someway, somehow. Then my fiance convinced me to check out a new phone since I have the “new every two” discount. I’m glad I listened to him because shopping on verizonwireless.com I found that not only was I eligible for the $100 new every two discount, but I also would get a $50 discount if I purchased the Chocolate online, making the entire cost to me $0 :) I couldn’t pass it up!
The Look and Feel of the Cherry Chocolate
I choose Cherry Chocolate not just because I love Chocolate Covered Cherries ;) I choose it because red is my favorite color! Plus in the store, the black looked like it showed finger prints, the white looked like it might get dirty easy, and the mint is just ugly. The Chocolate, as advertised, looks a lot like an MP3 player. When closed, it’s approximately 4″ x 2″ x .75″. This means it fits easily into my coat, purse or pants pocket (although I hardly do the last one). The front shows the large 1.75″x1.25″ color screen, and a touch pad similar to an Ipod. On the sides you have your volume, voice, music, end, and camera buttons. The point of that is that you can access voice commands, music, or turn up and down the ringer without having to open up the phone.
This is a slide phone, which I love even more than my old flip phone! Answering the phone is a snap as when it rings I just slide it open and it answers. I love that I can actually see who is calling without answering the phone because the screen is on the outside. When you slide it open, the phone stretches to 5″ and exposes the 10 # keys, the * and the #. The keys are a little hard to press because they are all so close together and pretty far pressed in already. However, I got used to that and learned to type a little differently than my previous phones. The phone seems durable as I’ve already dropped it a few times with no damage! I’ve seen flip phones break in two or crack when dropped, but I can’t see this phone breaking that way.
Ok enough about looks! So… how does it work??
The Functions and Features I use
CALLING: I of course make loads of calls! On my old phone, I always had to turn it up as high as possible and I still couldn’t here. However on this phone I can hear the other person loud and clear without having to go to the top. Also, it does have speakerphone. Other reviews say it doesn’t but my fiance informs me originally they didn’t come with it, but since then they came out with a software update and mine came with speakerphone. I use this feature a lot also.
NOTEPAD: I’m big on notes and I love how this phone stores the date with the note and makes them easy to read/sort through.
EZ TIP CALC: This is sweet. You can enter in your total bill, and what percent you want to give, and the thing auto calculates a tip and total. You can also put how many people are splitting the bill! I’m horrible at calculating tips, and before this phone I relied on others to do it for me, now I can do it myself :)
CALCULATOR: I also put a shortcut to the calendar instantly, this is very useful for people like me who are bad at math and need to figure out a quick calculation.
CAMERA/VIDEO: I have a digital camera, so I would not use this phone as a camera for occasions.. however, when a camera is not available and I want a snapshot, this phone works great and take pretty large pics! Check out the link below to see. I also took a few short videos that came out clear, but kind of tiny.
See pics taken with this camera here: http://vivasuzi.com/houses/2006-12-16%20Wall%20Border.asp
LOCKING IT: You can set the phone to stay locked unless you hit a side button twice. This means no mistakes in turning it on. There is also no fear of accidentally auto dialing your phone since you can’t hit the numbers unless you slide it open. That’s good enough for me.
QUICK DIAL: Just like most phones you can set quick dial numbers where you will press and hold “1” for example and it will call the assigned person. This phone works well with that in one way but bad in another. On the good side you can assign quick dial numbers at your leisure anytime you want. Other phones make you select a number as soon as you put a new contact in the phone, but this one doesn’t. On the bad side, it is hard to press and hold a number down long enough for it to auto dial. It seems to be an awful long time. However, you can hit the number than tap send and it will quick dial. You can store up to 99 quick dial numbers.
THE TOUCH PAD: It took me awhile to get this down because I’ve never had an ipod, and I’ve only played with my dad’s for a bit. However you can set the sensitivity and once I played around enough I am now able to control the touchpad with no problem.
INDICATORS: There is an indicator for missed calls and another for voice mail that does not go away until you have seen the missed calls or heard the voice mail! I love that because there are many times I see a missed call but don’t have time to see who it was, so now I can remember to see it later. There’s also an indicator to show your alarm is on, or if you have something set in your calendar for today, and probably more I haven’t seen yet.
ALARM: I use the alarm quite a bit. It is cool because it will automatically snooze if you miss it, than replay in a few minutes. My old phone would not snooze and would instead play and play and play until I finally shut it off! That was annoying, this is better.
CALENDAR: I always use the calendar b/c things come up and I need to store events before I forget them. This phone allows you to set a repeating alarm which is very useful if you want to schedule in a workout once a week :) What’s missing is my countdown! I used to love that on my old phone but have not found that on this phone yet.
RINGERS: I didn’t like any of the default ringers so I spent 9$ downloading three (one for calls, one for messages and one for alarms). I was disappointed all the default ringers and sounds were too annoying for me, but now I have the Pirates of the Caribbean theme everytime someone calls so I’m over it :)
The Functions and Features I don’t use
If this phone weren’t free, I would never have bought the Chocolate because the main features just aren’t for me. But for your information on why others think this phone is so cool, here are the features!
MP3 PLAYER: I didn’t want to pay the extra money to get a memory card and headphones to use this feature, so I don’t! However I can still see how easy it is to use because even though I have no songs, I still have access to the empty playlists and it seems to work much like my dad’s ipod.
BLUETOOTH: My fiance is jealous that I have a bluetooth phone! So if that is something you are looking for, it’s there, and my fiance already tested it with his free bluetooth phone and it works! Now I just have to hide it from him whenever he’s around :)
The end! That’s all I can say about this phone. There may be more features that I just don’t use, but even so I love this phone! I give it 5 stars because even with the keypad and quick dial trouble, everything else is great! I love the slide feature, the large clear screen, and just the overall coolness of the phone. I will keep this one until it breaks – unless I get another free upgrade in 2 years :) Enjoy!!
