Teaching a dog tricks is fun for you and your dog. This will make you proud to show off your dog, and it will make him happy to please you. To start teaching your dog tricks he will first need to know the basic commands. When teaching your dog a new command you should do this is an area with no distractions. Try the trick at least 3 times a day for about 5-10 each setting. Do not ever get mad or yell at your dog if he does not do the trick right. This will make a very timid animal and he will not focus on pleasing you. He will focus on how to stay away from you. While you are training treats are a must. I would suggest buying very small treats for this. Some people even dice up a hot dog and use this for training. Which ever you prefer would be good.
This is one of the first commands your dog should know. This is probably one of the easiest also. While you dog is standing up tell him sit while you push his rear into a sitting position. When his bottom hits the floor tell him good boy and give him a small treat. Then start the process over. After a few times he should catch on fairly easy. Usually after a few times the dog knows this trick and can do it with out the pushing of his rear. If this happens to not be the case with your dog, keep trying. In a day or two the dog will know the command sit.
This one will take some time to learn as you will need to do this is steps. First have your animal in the sit positing and stand directly in front of him. Take a few steps back, not a lot you still want to be pretty close to him. Tell him stay and wait a few seconds. As long as he does not move tell him good boy and give him a treat. I did this for one day and then the next day increased my steps back and the seconds he needed to stay each day. By the end of the week he was sitting on one side of the yard and I was on the other side and he did not move until he was told to come.
Once you dog is in the sit position you will need to teach him the lay down command. Start by tell his down and placing your hand on his back and gently push him down. While you are pushing him down say the word down. When he gets to the ground use your stay command. Give him a treat and tell him good boy. Another way to teach this command is while hes in the sit position step in front of him and gently pull his front legs so that he slides into the down position. While you are doing that use the word down. Once he is down give him a treat and tell him good boy.
This is a neat little trick to teach him. This trick is also known as shake. You will need to figure out what word you are going to use. Stick with the word that you choose and don’t switch. That will only confuse you dog and delay the process. Place your dog in the sit position and stand in front of him. Grab his paw while saying the word paw. Tell him good boy and hand him a treat. A few times with this and dogs usually pick it right up. Stand in front of him, hold out your hand and say “paw”. You might be surprised that he gives up the paw pretty fast.
This one can be easy or tricky depending on the dog. If you have a dog that barks a lot you might want to skip this command all together. If you have a quiet dog then this is great to teach them. Start in the sit position and tell him bark. You will want to use a firm louder voice. Hold the treat so they can see what you have in your hand and keep repeating your self. They will eventually get frustrated with you and bark. As soon as he barks give him the treat and tell him good boy. Do this a few times and they will get the picture.
This trick is best taught once the dog knows the down and stay command. Once the dog is in the down command, tell him stay. Once he has done that you will need to kneel down beside him and set the treat a few feet in front of him. Keep one hand on the treat and on hand on his back. Tell the dog get the treat and when he tried to stand up firmly push him so he can not get up. He will then try and crawl toward the treat. Once he crawls a short distance tell him good boy and give him the treat. If by chance he gets up place him back in position and start over
