Doing homework has changed a lot in the past 20 years. Students today have an unbelievable amount of resources available to them on the Internet.
In fact, there is so much available online that it’s a wonder young students even know what a book is. Or a library.
With so much information available online, you might think that students are learning great techniques for researching information, and how to evaluate online resources. Some middle students are simply given a very limited list of sites they are allowed to use for research, rather than being taught how to actually evaluate those online resources.
It is not surprising then, that so many students, when left without the tools to evaluate resources on their own, do not even take the time to find valid research sites. Instead, they ask someone else.
There are valid homework help sites available to students These sites tend to help students by pointing them in the right direction, or by helping students hone their problem-solving skills.
Then there are the “easy answer” sites.
Many students abuse the current question-answer type sites just to find the answer to their homework questions. In the amount of time it takes to log in, ask the question wait for answers, the student could go and research the answer themselves.
What is also interesting is that students are not discerning between a good source and a bad source of information. They are trusting the answer from another person thaqn they are from a proven information source like an encyclopedia.
Which brings us to the the problems caused by relying solely on the Internet as a source of information for homework assignments. Students of the Internet age no longer have to blame the dog for eating their homework. The Internet has provided many more creative homework excuses.
