Reidland is a suburban neighborhood of Paducah, Kentucky in McCracken County. The population of Reidland according to the 2000 census was over 4,300 residents. Reidland is a quiet, somewhat rural area outside of the city of Paducah, Kentucky. It is a friendly, easy going place to live. It is considered one of the best neighborhoods in Paducah.
Reidland is a family friendly neighborhood and is known for having good schools. Reidland has a neighborhood elementary school, Reidland Elementary School, providing education from kindergarten to grade five.
Reidland Elementary School’s facilities are older than some of the other McCracken County Schools, having been built in the 1960’s. Most of the classrooms are located in separate bungalows located in a hub formation around the central buildings. The school has recently undergone some limited renovation to modernize it. Modular buildings have been brought in to serve as additional and replacement classrooms. The school is centrally located in the heart of Reidland and is probably no more than five to ten minutes from all Reidland residents.
Reidland Middle School is a shared middle school for both the Reidland and Farley neighborhoods. It is located next to the shared high school, Reidland High School. The middle school provides education for grades six, seven and eight. The two story facilities are of the 1960’s era and like the Reidland Elementary school, in need of much modernization. The middle school shares a cafeteria with the high school, but has it’s own gymnasium and library.
Reidland High School, located next to Reidland Middle School, provides education for grades nine through twelve. The original buildings from the 1960’s are still in use. A much needed, large, more modern addition with classrooms was built onto Reidland High School in the early 1990’s. The addition included a much needed elevator accessing the second floor. Again, Reidland High School shares a cafeteria with Reidland Middle School located next door.
Reidland High School has it’s own library and full size gymnasium complete with a large elevated stage as well as a football field. Reidland’s school mascot is the greyhound and the sports teams are dubbed Reidland greyhounds. Sporting teams and activities are a central feature of Reidland high school and are greatly emphasized. Reidland has both a boy’s and girl’s basketball team. Other teams include football, soccer, and baseball. Of course, no team would be complete without cheerleaders, which is also a featured activity at Reidland High School.
Reidland High School has many activities and programs for a variety of subjects. Future Business Leaders of America, Future Homemakers of America, Drama Club, and Beta Club are just a few examples of some of the extracurricular activities. Reidland High School also boasts a chapter of Future Farmers of America and has it’s own greenhouse which often sells plants to the local neighborhood.

Reidland is quite lacking in dining and entertainment options within the Reidland neighborhood itself. Reidland is located within five to twenty minutes of most local dining and entertainment options. Within Reidland itself there are only two neighborhood dining options. Chongs is a small Chinese restaurant with several other local locations besides the one in Reidland. It is a fairly reasonably priced family restaurant with sit-down or take-out dining and quite good food.
The only other dining option within Reidland proper is Southern Pride. Southern Pride has an excellent family restaurant and truck stop combined. Southern Pride also has a separate area that has fuel, weighing and overnight parking options for semi trucks. Southern pride also has one of the few fuel stations in Reidland.
The Southern Pride restaurant has both sit-down and buffet style dining. The menu is somewhat varied and has a decent range of choices. The buffet menu changes regularly, but is generally popular American country food, sometimes known as “soul food.” Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegetables and macaroni as well as homemade desserts are usually available on the buffet. On Friday and Saturday an excellent fish buffet is available with fried catfish, fried shrimp and all the side dishes. Southern Pride has many low-cost menu items such as sandwiches. The buffet, even at about $10.00 per person on fish night, is still an excellent value. The service and food are some of the best in Paducah. You can also purchase home made whole pies with sky high meringues from the checkout counter at Southern Pride. Southern Pride is an excellent choice for family dining.
There are very few opportunities for entertainment within the Reidland neighborhood. Reidland is located within five to twenty minutes of Paducah’s entertainment options such as bowling alleys, movie theaters, movie rentals, skating rinks, local theater and concerts. Reidland has features such as a local small drugstore, small laundromat, and several beauty parlors. One family practice of physicians as well as several dentists are centrally located in Reidland as well as a vet clinic. There are some small businesses such as a sewing machine shop, swimming pool shop and lawn mower shop located in Reidland. But job opportunities in Reidland proper are rather limited, due to the fact that Reidland is primarily a residential area.
Reidland has a large flea market, Trader’s Mall. It has a small cafe with fare such as hot dogs and hamburgers. Also included is a combined small barber and beauty shop. The flea market is open only on weekends, except during the holiday season when it is also sometimes open on Fridays. Used and new items of many kinds can be found here. There are many vintage and antique items for sale at usually somewhat reasonable prices. Within Trader’s Mall is a small leather shop, an excellent designer duplicate purse shop as well as several small jewelers. Leashed dogs are always welcome within Trader’s Mall, making it a great place to go out with your pet. There is something for everyone at Trader’s Mall, making it a fun weekend destination.
