Irish rock star, Bono, received the great honor of becoming a knight of the British Empire on Thursday., reports Fox News (foxnews.com).. Bono, 46, is a rock star and global humanitarian.
Bono was named a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British in an informal ceremony. The ceremony was held in the Dublin home of British Ambassador David Reddaway. Reportedly the informal ceremony was filled with laughter.
Bono made a statement to reporters after the ceremony. Fox News (foxnews.com) reported that Bono said” “You have permission to call me anything you want – except Sir, all right? Lord of lords, your demigodness, that’ll do.”.
An Irish citizen, the rock star won’t have the title “Sir” before his name, as British knights, such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Sir Mick Jagger do. The honor of the title “Sir” is reserved for citizens of the United Kingdom, or British commonwealth countries. Ireland left the Commonwealth when it became a republic in 1949.
Ambassador Reddaway paid tribute to Bono”s work as a compaigner against poverty and disease in Africa. Reddaway asked whether Bono was disppointed that becoming a knight no longer involved a sword or kneeling.
“Please, I wasn’t expecting you to kneel”, replied Bono.
The rock star was accompanied by his wife, Ali, and their four children, Their children are Jordan, Eve, Elijah and John. Us guitarist, The Edge and bassist Adam Clayton were also in attendance.
Bono’s son, John, age 5, was disappointed that a light saber wasn’t presented to his dad. John thought his dad was becoming a Jedi.
Bono was born Paul Hewson in 1960 in Dublin Ireland. Bono and the band U2 achieved worldwide fame, and sometimes notoriety, with their earnest charm and theatrical persona.
His powerful voice has evolved over the years, with a versatility rarely heard in rock bands.
Beyond that fame of U2, Bono has extended himself into projects and causes, emerging to be a social animal and activist. He has rallied numerous actors, artist, and activists to his cause. His most recent cause has been to end Third World Debt.
