These phobias may seem strange and sometimes funny. Unfortunately these phobias are anything but funny to the people suffering from them. They are real phobias with real people suffering from them. If you know anyone that seems to suffer from one of these phobias please do not torment them with it. This can be very traumatic for the person who has this kind of phobia.
“Phobias are the most common mental disorder,” says R. Reid Wilson, PhD, spokesman for the American Psychological Association. “Over their lifetimes, 11% of people will have a phobia.”
There is a difference between fear of something and a phobia. To be classified as a phobia, the fear has to cause some level of impairment. A person can be afraid of something and still be able to deal with the situation. A person with a phobia cannot deal with the situation.

White on clothes, walls, food, paper, anything that has white must be avoided. In extreme cases even hearing the word white can cause trauma.
Almost all phobias are treated much in the same way. By using cognitive-behavioral therapy doctors try to teach a person with a phobia how to manage their feelings. Treatment of a phobia is also going virtual reality style. Because it is expensive to purchase the equipment only four or five places in the U.S. are using virtual reality.
The University of Washington is one institution that uses virtual reality, along with real life, in their treatment of phobias.
Each doctor will use a different method for treating their patient’s phobias. Each patient also may require a different form of therapy to work for them. Treatment for the most part will use cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and virtual therapy or a mixture of all types of treatment.
