The Catskill Mountains of New York State have a beauty all their own. And buying a vacation home here does not mean that you will only come during the summer. There is some great skiing here, when Mother Nature cooperates. This is the place for the true outdoor people, those who love to hike the mountains, boat fish and swim in the beautiful lakes and have a country experience by visiting and participating in the many country fairs and festivals that go on in the Catskill Mountains year round. These things and the fact that most of the area is only a couple of hours drive from New York City, make the Catskill Mountain Region of New York State the perfect vacation place for a great many people.
There are a great many small towns and villages that dot the Catskill Mountain region and each one has its own style and personality. If you are seriously considering the Catskill Mountains for the location of your summer home, I have a suggestion for you. Take a weekend and spend it at one of the inns in a town or village that appeals to you. Take a walk around, see what it is like and stop in at one of the local realtors. They will be more than happy to show you what is available and you do not have to make a decision right away. Take a look at what some of the communities have to offer and give yourself a little preview of what you will find. These examples are at the lower end of the price range and are by far not a total of everything that is available, but they are a good representation and will give you a general idea of what type of vacation home awaits you.
In Green County in the town of Coxsackie, which is on the west bank of the Hudson River, you can get a small 3 bedroom mobile home for about $160,000. A larger 3 bedroom ranch style home will start at about $180,000. A four bedroom A Frame in a private community will start at about $250,000
In Hannacroix, a small two bedroom mobile home will start at about $160,000. A three bedroom ranch will start at about $250,000
In Palenville, which is actually part of the Village of Catskill, the County Seat, you can get a small 3 bedroom home for as little as $170,000. A larger 3 or 4 bedroom ranch style home will start at about $180,000.
In Cairo, a newer model hi ranch style home will start at about $195,000. Cairo is right by one of the most beautiful natural places in the region, Catskill State Park.
In Athens a small three bedroom home will start at about $175,000. If you want a look at Athens, get a copy of the 2005 version of “War of the Worlds”. A four bedroom older home will start at about $300,000. Homes like this can go back to the 17 and 1800’s.
In Greenville a four bedroom ranch style home will start at about $250,000.
In East Durham, in a new community, you can get a 2 bedroom home starting at about $250,000. A three bedroom w bath chalet style will start at about $260,000
In Windham, the home of Windham Mountain Ski Resort, you can get a three bedroom, 2 bath ranch home for about $260,000.
