Valentine’s Day Crafts

by sumo nova

Valentine’s Day Crafts are fun for kids. I have put together another list of crafts for kids to do by themselves or with a parent. Have lots of fun with them and check out my first article for even more ideas!

Stained “Glass” Hearts

Supplied needed:
Construction paper

Tissue paper

White glue

Waxed paper

Paint brushes for glue

What to do:
Cut out a large heart from the construction paper and then cut out a smaller heart from the center of the first heart so it looks like you have a heart frame. Put the heart frame on a piece of waxed paper and pour lots of glue onto waxed paper. Spread glue all around the center of the heart on the waxed paper and touching the edges of the heart frame. Now use pieces of tissue paper (either tear into small pieces or pre-cut into square pieces) to fill in the center of the heart making sure all of the glue is covered and there are no gaps. Let dry until glue is COMPLETELY dry (usually at least 24 hours…..depends on how thick the glue was spread). You should then be able to peel off the waxed paper from the back and you can punch a hole in the top and hang in your windows!

Heart Tote Bags

Supplied needed:

Small canvas tote bags (can be purchased at craft stores)

Heart shaped sponges

Fabric paint (red, pink, white)

Paint brushes

Paper plates

What to do:
Spread a blob of fabric paint on a paper plate with the paint brush. Put different colors on different plates so that they do not mix together when the sponges are dipped. Dip the heart sponges into the paint and then print them onto the tote bags in various designs. Smaller hearts can be painted on top of larger hearts in different/contrasting colors. It helps to wait until one color is dry before painting another color on top. In addition, if you want to paint stripes or polka dots onto the hearts for a creative design, you can do so with the paint brushes after the first color is dry. This makes a cute and useful gift for parents or teachers.

Cinnamon Hearts

Supplies

Cinnamon

Applesauce

Rolling pin

Waxed paper

Heart shaped cookie cutters

Pencil

Ribbon

Paints

What to do:
Mix about equal parts cinnamon and applesauce. It should feel like playdough when it is enough cinnamon. If it is too sticky, add more cinnamon. Let children mush and play with it until it is well mixed. When they are done playing with it, use a rolling pin to roll to about ½” to ¾” thick and then use heart shaped cookie cutters to cut out heart shapes. Use a pencil or other thin object to poke a hole at the top of the heart. Let dry on waxed paper for at least 24 hours, maybe longer, depending on thickness and weather conditions. When dry, insert ribbon through hole in top for hanging. You can then use paints to paint a message on the heart. I have found that paint pens work very well for this. These smell so wonderful!

Heart Pencil Can

Supplies Needed:
Empty, cleaned out vegetable can

Paint, red, white, pink

Glue

Heart shapes cut from construction paper or craft foam or felt

Glitter, optional

What to do:
Mix glue with paint in a small disposable cup. Equal quantities work best and help the paint to stick to the can. Paint the entire can with the paint/glue mixture. You can now stick your heart cut outs onto the can. They should stick since you used half glue in your paint. If desired you can then sprinkle with a bit of glitter (which should also stick very well to the can but not to the glued on hearts) to make it look really fancy.

Heart Wreaths

Supplies needed

Paper plates

Precut hearts in various sizes

Glue

What to do:
Cut the center of the paper plate out so that there is a hole in the middle of the plate. Next glue hearts onto the rim of the paper plate, overlapping so that there is no place that the plate shows through. You can either glue the hearts so that all the points point into the center or you can glue the hearts so that all of the hearts points point down. Both make very interesting designs. You can also use smaller hearts to glue on top of larger hearts for a 3-D effect. Hearts can extend beyond the edge of the plate to make the wreath look bigger. Once glue is dry the wreath can be hung on a door to decorate for Valentine’s Day.

Heart Headband and wand

Supplies needed:

Plastic headband

2 Pipe cleaners

Foam hearts

What to do:
This is very simple to make but looks cute when worn by a little girl. Wrap the ends of the pipe cleaners firmly around the headband, one toward the right of center and one towards the left of center. Now glue two large foam hearts on either side of the top of each pipe cleaner (the part sticking up) Decorate by gluing a smaller heart on top of each large heart. You can make the wand in the same manner using a pipe cleaner and hearts glued onto the end of it. Little girls can be the “heart fairy.”

Heart Pillow

Supplies needed

2 large felt hearts

Yarn

Fiberfill stuffing

Yarn and felt for decorations

Fabric glue

What to do:
Put the two hearts together and sew around the two using the yarn, leaving a gap large enough to put the fiberfill inside. You can either use a whip stitch or a running stitch to do the sewing. If you use a whip stitch, make sure that the stitches are very close together so that the fiberfill does not leak out when it is filled. Fill with fiberfill and sew the hole closed. Now use felt scraps (you can cut into hearts) and pieces of yarn (you can shape these into hearts) with some glue to decorate the top of the pillow. This is a very decorative throw pillow.

“I Love you to Pieces” Picture Frame

Supplies needed

Wooden picture frames or pre-cut craft foam picture frames

Jigsaw puzzle pieces from puzzles you no longer want

Glue

Cardstock paper

String

Photo of child/ren

What to do:
Glue puzzle pieces onto the picture frame in any old collage sort of way. You can glue one layer and then some more pieces overlapping or just do a single layer. Smaller puzzle pieces are better but larger ones will work too. Just make sure that the pieces do not cover too much of the center of the frame as you will want to be able to see the picture in the middle. After glue is dried, you can put a picture of a child in the frame and the child can give this as a gift to a parent or grandparent. Use the cardstock to make a tag that you can attach to the frame with a piece of string. The tag should say, “I love you to pieces!”axed paper
