I love making jewelry. This simple Valentine’s Day clay necklace is perfect for a group of girls to make at a school class party or even a birthday party. The heart beads can be left in their natural clay color or even painted to suit your fancy. This simple clay craft is great for a group for kids because your clay will a really long way. The kids will spend so much time making the heart beads that they won’t realize they are not using a ton of clay.
You can make a Valentine’s Day heart bead clay craft project in less than 2 hours. Be sure to allot for drying time for the clay. So, if you are doing this at a slumber party then have the kids start making the beads out of the air drying clay the night before. They can dry overnight and the kids can put their necklaces together after breakfast.
Now, to make Valentine’s Day heart clay beaded necklace you will need:
Air Drying Clay
Wooden or Metal Skewers
Now, the first thing your need to do is find your air drying clay. I buy this at Dick Blick art supply store. I have also seen it at Pearl Paints. You may be able to find it at Michaels in smaller containers. Generally a 5 pound block of air drying clay will cost about $10. You can make a large number of necklaces with one block. You can also buy the lacy in white, red, and a variety of other colors.
Ok, so if you are making this with a group of kids I recommend going ahead and slicing if a slab of clay for each child. They can keep it wrapped in plastic wrap near them so they don’t have to reach for more.
Have each child break off small pieces of clay. They should roll the clay in their hands to make a small ball. Now, use the wood skewer to form this ball into a heart shape. Simply make the two rounded top parts of the heart on one Side of the bead. On the bottom use the wood skewer to paint the point of the heart.
This will be the heart shaped bead. These beads can be made to almost any size. I recommend about ¼ inch to ½ inch hearts for the best beads. The kids can also roll out coils and cut out tube shaped beads. The beads can be any shape they want to create.
Now, use your wooden skewer to make the hole through the center of the heart shaped bead. You may need to help smaller children with this step of the craft project. Help them to press a hole through the shape starting on one side and coming out the other.
Continue this hole making process until all of the heart shaped beads are ready.
Now, the kids can also crave designs into their air drying clay. Names, letters, school initials, and even polka dots are all great. Try writing out words like “LOVE” and “Be Mine” putting one letter in each heart shaped bead.
Now, lay the beads out on a flay surface until the colored clay is completely dry.
If you want to paint the bead this would be the time to do it. You can spray the beads all one color, paint each one individually, or even leave them in the beautiful color you bought the clay in.
Once any paint has dried you can string the heart shaped beads on your twine. I like to make the twine long enough to slip over the child’s head, but you could also buy some jewelry clasps at the arts and craft store. You could also buy some pre made chains at the arts and craft store and string your heart shaped clay beads on those as well. Be creative, as you want here! I have also seen some great colored yarns that would work perfectly for this craft project. You will be able to see the string, so it could be important to a little girl what color the string is.
