Everyone loves baking all kinds of cookie recipes at Valentine’s Day. I end up giving some as Valentine gifts, keeping some for home, and even taking some into work. This Valentine’s Day heart shaped cookie platter is a wonderful way to display your cookies. You can even give it as a gift filled with some of those cookies! You can make this Valentine’s Day cookie platter craft for less than $20, probably around $10 depending on what craft materials you already have. This is a fun project for kids as well as adults.
To Make Valentine’s Day Heart Cookie platter you will need:
Air Drying Clay (Like Active Clay)
Clay working tools (Or a tooth pick, pencil, paring knife…)
Acrylic Paints (Optional)
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint (Not Optional)
Embellishments, like beads, glass stones…(Optional)
The first step is to cut off a piece of your air-drying clay. Roll it out to about ¼ inch thick. You can make this platter as big or small as you want. I think about 8 to 10 inches wide and about 14 inches tall is a very nice sized platter. If you are going to fill this with cookies and give to a single person, you may want to cut this size in half. Nothing is worse than being given a huge platter of cookies you know you cannot eat!
Now, use a toothpick to trace out your Valentine’s Day heart tree shape. The good thing about clay is that you can draw your shape and if you do not like it, simply smooth it over with your finger. Once you have your heart outline made, use a paring knife to cut the tree out. Remove any of the excess clay and use it for the next step.
Break off some pieces of clay and roll them out into coils. They work best at about ¼ inch thick, but you can play around with that measurement. Use these coils to build up a wall around the outer edge of your Valentine’s Day heart shaped platter. You can use a paintbrush or your finger to put water on the edge of the tree and then lay your coils on top. Use you finger to smooth the clay into each other to make a finished platter. I like to make this edge about 1 to 2 inches tall, but again, that is optional.
Now, you can leave your entire Valentine’s Day heart platter smooth or add embellishments or even carve in details with your clay working tools. I like to carve in polka dots using the toothpick. Next I randomly outline small circular shape. Once you have finished embellishing your clay, let it sit out and dry completely.
Now, you can either paint your clay Valentine’s Day heart platter or simply leave eat the color of the clay. No matter what you do you need to spray it with a coat of clear acrylic spray paint once it is dry? You will not be able to ever wash the platter if you don’t add this coat of clear paint. It would also not be very safe to put cookies on.
If you are going to paint it with acrylic paints your can paint them directly onto the dry clay. Allow your acrylic paints to dry, and then spray on your clear coat.
Now you can load up your Valentine’s Day heart cookie plate with goodies. Wrap it in clear plastic wrap and give as a gift or keep at home for your family to enjoy.
This heart shaped cookie platter looks great if you paint it in an antique white color, let it dry, then lightly sand the platter with fine sand paper. Wipe away any dust, and then spray with the clear acrylic spray paint. This gives it an older vintage or shabby chic look!
