Refresh is a level 41 spell only aquirable by the Red Mage class in Final Fantasy XI. This is a small guide on how to utilize the spell Refresh to its full potential.
Refresh is an enhancing skill that grants a party member, or yourself, mana regeneration for a specific duration of time.
There is an “order” you should go by when casting Refresh on party members.
1. Yourself- You are the first priority. Without your MP, no one can have Refresh either.
2. Paladin- The tank is second priority since they keep everyone else alive by taking the majority of the damage.
3. Healer- The healer needs the MP to heal the tank, its an MP system.
4. Dark Knigh/Blue Mage- The Dark Knight needs MP for Drain, Aspir, and Absorb Spells. Blue Mages need about the same as a Dark Knight does, maybe even a little more so since they rely more on their MP.
5. Black Mage- The Black Mages need MP, but to a certain extent. They have a good sized MP pool as it is, but giving them too much MP might be what kills them.
6. Others- Others are jobs that have minimal MP from a sub job or something that don’t really need it unless you have extra MP laying around.

You are first, as I stated before. This way you always have MP accumulating to cast enfeebling spells, cures, and of course, refresh on other party members.
The Paladin is second in line. The reason that the Paladin is second is so that they can keep hate, and in emergency situations they can cure themselves while the mages rest if they are low on MP.
The Healer is third for curing responsibilities, and erasing negative status alignments on party members.
The Dark Knight is fourth in line. Dark Knights have a pretty small MP pool, but their MP can be necessary for survival in some situations such as strong AoE attacks and spells. When a monster is casting these AoE spells or using these AoE attacks, a Dark Knight can Stun the monster, making the monster unable to use that attack. Black Mages also have access to Stun, but I believe since Dark Knights are almost always closer to the monster, they would recognize the monster using the attacks faster, so they can Stun faster. This is in most situations f course. If a monster does however use this attack, if a Dark Knight has enough MP, they can use Drain to give them a good amount of HP back, saving you some MP in the long run. Plus, Dark Knights have Absorb Spells. These Absorb Spells steal Strength, Dexterity, and other helpful stats from a monster.
Black Mages are fifth, which is debatable. Black Mages have a huge MP pool, so they almost need Refresh when nuking. But Black Mages, unlike Dark Knights, can rest during a battle to help bring back mana into their MP pool. Plus, Black Mages have the job trait Clear Mind, which allows them to regenerate more MP when resting. Combine Clear Mind, specific food, some special gear, some spells, Black Mages gain MP back like crazy.
Other jobs that use some MP are last, and should only be Refreshed when you have an excess amount on MP that you are not using. These jobs include jobs that do not naturally get MP from their main job, they just get it from their subjob. Some examples are Beast Masters, Puppet Masters, Corsair, ect.
Summoners generally go under Healers, but since they have such a huge mana pool, and they have an MP regenerating trait, they don’t need it nearly as much as some of the other jobs. The only time I can truly think of when a Summoner may truly come first or second in line is when they are using Astral Flow, their 2 Hour Ability that drops them down to 0 MP. Astral Flow deals serious damage most of the time, so it is good to give them almost top priority in this situation. Plus Astal Flow is only accessible every 2 Hours, unless you have a Corsair, but that just makes it more technical and more in depth as well.
Refresh costs 40 MP, but it regenerates back 120 MP over time. So 120 – 40 = 80. If you cast Refresh on yourself, over time you gain 80 MP if you let Refresh run its full course.
Refresh is a necessity as a Red Mage. From my research I have found that is on average lower than 5k in the Auction House, so there is almost no excuse for not getting this spell as soon as possible. Refresh is arguably the best, and most important Red Mage spell out there. Refresh should always be casted on yourself, you are first priority.
