This simple vintage license plate valance is the perfect way to display your collection of vintage license plates without taking up a large amount of wall space.
Surprisingly there are quite a few avid vintage license plate collectors out there. Even if you do not collect vintage license plates you could make this simple window valance with new license plate and even those plastic license plates sold at tourist’s shops!
This vintage license plate valance is a great addition to a game room, a home office, or even a family room.
My favorite feature about this vintage license plate window treatment is that you can easily interchange your vintage license plates simply by reaching up there and taking them down!
To Make a Vintage License Plate Valance You Will Need:
Vintage License Plate s (Lots of them)
One 2X10 cut to fit your window
Paint Brush Sand Paper
L Brackets Power Drill
Now, the first step is to measure how wide your individual window is. I like to make this valance stick out about 5 to 6 inches on either side, but that is up to you. You will also need two pieces of this same board cut to about 4 to 5 inches wide. These will be the sides of your valance.
Tip: Also keep in mind the length and width of your vintage license plates. Some of the really old ones can be quite small and in unusual sizes.
Now, Screw in through the front ends of your long board and attach your two side pieces of the valance. I like to predrill these holes and then put in my screws so that the boards do not split.
Now, sand your entire wood valance lightly.
Paint on a coat of primer, like Kilz.
Let the primer dry, then paint on a coat of your paint.
I like to paint this valance because you will be able to see it behind your Vintage License Plate collection. This is a good time to introduce an accent color into your room. You could also paint this board the same color as your walls if you have any leftover wall paint.
Now, let that paint dry.
Now, I like to lay my valance on its side pieces face up on a work surface. Start arranging your vintage license plate collection. This is the retime to play around with the design.
Now, use a pencil to mark where the holes are, thrones that would normally attach the license plate to the car.
Use your power drill to predrill the holes halfway through the board. Then screw in your Vintage License Plates.
You could also add washers for an industrial look.
Now, use your L brackets to hang the Vintage License Plate valance on the wall. I like to put one L bracket on the left end of the valance and one on the right end of the valance They should be placed on the inside of the side wood pieces. Try to screw into a wood stud if at all possible.
Do this for every window in your room and you can really display quite a Vintage License Plate collection.
You can also hang curtains from inside of this Vintage License Plate valance by using a tension rod inside of it. The wood sides of the valance will easily support the tension rod.
