As a freelancer, I spend around 40 hours a week in front of the computer. With any other job I would be getting up and walking around three times a day, during my breaks. But, when you’re a freelance writer, it’s easy to forget about taking breaks. It’s also easy to forget to take time to eat. While being a freelance writer can lead to weight issues there are still ways for freelance writers to stay healthy.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #1: Schedule Time to Eat
As a freelance writer, I have the horrible habit of skipping meals in order to have more time to write. This is very unhealthy. As a freelance writer you should schedule time to eat. Also you should eat before sitting down to do your writing, especially if you work 8 hours a day.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #2: Eat Slowly
When you do schedule time to eat, take the time to eat slowly. I know it’s hard, as a freelance writer, to take the time and eat slowly, but if you don’t you’ll eat a lot more food than you actually should. You might also be tempted to choose foods that aren’t very healthy, simply because they are convenient.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #3: Eat Smaller Portions
As a freelance writer you may grab something from a fast food restaurant. If you do just be sure to choose foods that aren’t way more than you should be eating. Some of the portion sizes at popular fast food restaurants are not healthy because they are big enough for 2 people.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #4: Choose Better Snacks
Working in front of the computer leads to a habit that isn’t very healthy and I’m sure I’m not the only freelance writer who does this. When you’re in front of the computer you are often tempted to munch on snacks as you work. If you do this, be sure you are choosing healthy snacks and be sure you aren’t eating constantly.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #5: Do Desk Exercises
Freelance writers can stay really healthy by adding desk exercises into their routine. While these are a really healthy thing to do, they are really hard to explain. Please see the resource section for a link that will explain these exercises and also has pictures.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #6: Take Breaks and Walk Around
At a normal job, you would have 15 minute breaks that would allow you to get up and stretch and walk around a bit. Why should a job as a freelance writer be any different? Schedule time for these breaks and get a little bit of exercise and maybe have a healthy snack.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #7: Know the Difference Between Boredom and Hunger
As I mentioned above, you may be tempted to snack while you’re at the computer. The only problem is most of the time you’re really not hungry. A great way to stay healthy for everyone, not just freelance writers, is to know the difference between hunger and boredom.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #8: Pay Attention to How Much You’re Eating
When you do have a snack at your computer, be sure to be aware of how much you are eating. It’s really easy, as a freelance writer, to get caught up with a project and before you know it, you’ve consumed half a package of Oreos. To make things even easier and healthier, portion out snacks or buy serving sized snacks.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #9: Exercise While Doing Research or Brainstorming
A really healthy thing to do while researching or brainstorming an article is to exercise. Walk on a treadmill or ride an exercise bike. Whatever you do, get some exercise in during your day.
Ways for Freelance Writers to Stay Healthy #10: Substitute
Freelance writers can make easy and healthy changes to their diet simply be substituting some of their snacks and drinks for healthier versions. For example, get baked potato chips rather than fried.
