According to the gospels the man they called Jesus some 2007 years ago was a poorish Jewish boy turned man, who lived a life of pacifism, controversy, and profound generosity to those who would trap him and ultimately take his earthly life. I find the WWJD slogan quite silly in light of the fact that the “would” was already “did”.
WDJD would not be so hypothetical sounding.
This man, who walked the streets of a warring hot spot so many years ago, was known for his outlandish ideas of forgiveness, his amazing talent as a leader which threatened the religious powers and political leaders of the time, and for hanging with losers and low lifes.
Today, our American Christ-ianity is quite unlike the man that the whole religion was founded after. Somehow the idea of loving your neighbor, your God, and your self has gotten twisted into love your neighbor if he agrees with you, love your money because God would have you be rich like all children of the king should be, and absorb yourself in whatever you wish to as long as you tithe, go to church, and have a strong list of do’s and don’ts.
I have read much of the accounts of the gospels and in no passage have I ever read anything about Jesus telling his followers to protect their way of life. I have never read any account that said he asked his friends and family members to worship him. I did read that he hung out with his friend, a hooker, and that he was found with people who drank, and partied, and behaved badly, yet he maintained his own fantastic identity and lived accordingly.
It is to my understanding that certain appointed men, and I do mean MEN, compiled the book that we call the BIBLE today. I like to joke with my church-going friends about how people who don’t pay attention think a group of guys got together and God inspired them to write this handy dandy book while they sipped lattes. When in fact, these were writings compiled over a long period of time and under very odd circumstances, and were sorted out as to what was appropriate to put therein by these MEN, and presto-chango a bible to “live by” was created, hashed, translated, diced, sliced, and julianne fried in about the 1500s or so. Yet, Sunday after Sunday there are thousands of people who get together and sing ‘”…and I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able, to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day…” and all sorts of other things when indeed all they are doing is mindlessly following what their mommy and daddy did, who followed what their mommy and daddy followed, …and so on OR… they are growing old and now need forgiveness and are starting to realize that sex, booze, and rock and roll are all coming to an end for them and they need to see what lies beyond this flesh so they embrace the hope of the story of Jesus or televangelist, doesn’t matter, as long as they find what they need.
It is my humble opinion that the four gospels should not be wrapped up with the rest of the bible. I think, from what I have read about Jesus, that he was no doubt one of the, if not THE gutsiest men to have ever lived. He went around openly proclaiming to have a relationship with God at a time when only priests could go before the HOLIEST OF HOLIES and offer up the blood of lambs. This really really offended the egos of the men who had those lofty positions, so much that they could have crucified that man!!! Oh, wait….. they did.
This man,Jesus, let people know that the common sense of forgiveness of others’ infractions as well as forgiveness of self was the perfect cycle of love. He hung around with the lower end of the classes; hookers, fishermen, etc. and his pockets were empty. He was not only not very well to do, but he actually liked it when people gave to the poor and left their possessions to follow his ways. Where do the televangelists get the idea that we are to hoard until we can have a huge home in a fine area of town with the upper crust of society while the rest of the world starves while we simultaneously bomb those who have harmed us and starve those who have no monetary gain for us? What kind of religion uses the name of a poor Jewish carpenter’s son to exploit peoples of other nations for the good of the Almighty Dollar when the son did just the opposite? What kind of pathetic religion gives 10 percent to the ‘body of Christ’ …good grief, I tip better than that!! At what point in time did Jesus ever encourage anyone anywhere to kill one’s neighbor??? I challenge people to think. Use your heads. You are being sold a bill of goods, again. If you feel you are within your “rights” to kill, I don’t blame you, but quit saying that Christ has anything to do with that mess because I have read the accounts of his life, and brother, that mind set did not exist anywhere in the man according to them.
I am not a theologian, but I can read and I do think Jesus had the answers to heal the world’s ills but nobody has the faith to really live as he did. WWJD??? You’ve got to be kidding. What DID Jesus do? He loved till the death. He did not seek to feed his ego, or to protect his way of life. He did not ask for worship. He did not condemn the men on the crosses next to him. He promised one that he would see paradise, and he ignored the other poor guy who blabbed out what most of us would have if we would have had stakes through our hands and the guy who claimed to be the son of the Almighty was being crucified next to us. He did not run a million miles an hour away from hookers, and others needing his strength, but instead, he embraced their humanity and lived the life of true, authentic, love right up to the end of his earthly life. Gandhi lived the life of Christ far better than you or I and he didn’t go around quoting bible verses; he simply lived and loved simply.
If all of the Christians of the world were resolute in following the Jesus of the gospels; we would see the changes that the world desperately needs. We would see masses of people unafraid to give give give and forgive forgive forgive. We would see multitudes fed with just a few loaves of bread and fish. We would see miracles of power of that kind of love over and over, and I honestly wonder if we would all vibrate at a different vibration. We are all vibrations, and each energy has different vibration; what if we actually followed the ways of the man in mass numbers?
What if we DID what Jesus DID? What if?
