It has been decided that over the next 26 months, minimum wage will increase from $5.15 to $7.25. Democrats tell us that hard working individuals across American need this increase because minimum wage has remained the same over the past 10 years. Already states had begun to raise their minimum wage. Here in North Carolina minimum wage went from $5.15 to $6.15. Now I know a lot of people are thinking, “Wow, that’s great. All of the hard working people of America will finally be able to afford a better life.” The only problem is, I don’t think Democrats or Americans have thought about what an increase in minimum wage will really do. A lot of these people are only concerned with helping the little guy and these people already make more than minimum wage so it doesn’t actually affect them, or so they think. I’m sure there are people who make minimum wage that are really excited, put that isn’t the case with everyone.
What American’s haven’t thought about are the changes that will come along thanks to this increase in minimum wage. These people haven’t thought about how this affects companies and their workers. People also haven’t thought about how it affects them directly. People who make more than minimum wage often have no idea of how this increase in minimum wage will affect them. First off, people don’t think about the fact that companies will need to come up with the money to pay their workers more money. Do American’s simply think that the company will bear the brunt of the increase in minimum wage? If they do, they’re wrong. Companies will make changes that will eventually cancel out the increase in minimum wage. Companies will of course raise the prices of their goods and this puts minimum wage workers right back where they started. There will be companies who won’t want to increase their prices, but also want to keep their money. Those companies will be the ones who lay off their employees. Then there will be even more companies who won’t do either of those things, but will increase the speed at which their products are made and will also use cheaper parts which will result in poor quality products. As you can see, it doesn’t look good when it comes to the products that we buy. We will either see an increase in price or products that are inferior.
When we move past the company view, we have to look at employees who are already making above minimum wage. There are some employees who are already making $7.25 and that might be considered really good money for the area that they live in. When the minimum wage increase hits, these people will no longer be paid well and they will also feel the brunt of the increase in prices. But what do people actually think. I’ve spoken with people on both sides, people who make minimum wage and people who make a lot more than minimum wage and here’s what they had to say.
Minimum Wage Workers
The minimum wage workers I have spoken to are actually afraid of losing their jobs. They are afraid that their company will no longer be able to afford to pay them. These were people who actually feared an increase in minimum wage.
Higher Wage Workers
These people were also against an increase in minimum wage. These workers honestly do care for the hard workers who get paid so little, but they knew that an increase in minimum wage only leads to a never ending cycle of high prices and people barely getting by. These workers also knew that the increase would affect them as well and that they would have to pay higher prices.
I find myself somewhere in the middle and I too fear the increase in minimum wage. As I mentioned earlier, the state I lived in just increased minimum wage by a dollar and prices have already begun rise. I desperately want help for those who work minimum wage jobs and are barely getting by, but an increase in minimum wage (in my opinion) is not the answer.
So I ask you America, what do you think of the increase in minimum wage and what do you think we should do to help those who make minimum wage?
