The Secret – what an intriguing title for a movie! Is it really “the” secret, what we are all looking for? What *are* we all looking for? The DVD is selling out quickly all over the world, and people are talking excitedly about the ideas the movie presents. So, having seen it, should I tell you? Or do you have to discover “the secret” for yourself?
I was in the bookstore attached to a new age type church, when I picked up a copy of the DVD. A voice from the back of the store called out “that’s our last copy, it’s very popular!” and according to new age protocol, that was a “sign” and I was required to buy the video in order to fulfill my destiny.
It was an impressive film, with authoritative interviews and clever special effects, and interesting dramatizations of historical situations in which figures from the past apparently discovered The Secret and were not able to reveal it, yet marveled about it. As the story goes, it is only in our enlightened age that we are able to talk openly about it.
The secret makes sense to me, I know I’ve seen it in action. People’s lives have changed when they have finally trusted the principles behind it. As in the dramatizations in the film, people who have realized the meaning of the secret have sometimes had spectacular success, and in their awe of its power, they remarked about how simple things really are.
For myself, I have had some trouble using the secret in my own life. I try, but I am still led astray by issues in my life, and their interference with the secret’s effects. It is frustrating, as I continue doing what is prescribed, only to come upon yet another obstacle towards the prosperity and type of life that I desire.
You may be wondering what The Secret is all about. You should see the movie, because it drives the point home a lot better than a simple revelation can do. I can put it into a few words, but if you don’t understand those words truly, as I mostly have not, then it will seem like a torturous clue, something hiding in plain sight, as you continue to struggle while still knowing at least the words that comprise the secret.
The secret is merely the restatement of the law of attraction, a familiar new age concept, and yet so much more. It states that whatever you think about is what will begin coming into your life. It gives the lie, as well it should, to the benefit of worrying. Worrying actually creates, according to the secret, the very things that you have been worrying about. And if you dream of gold and silver, of love and happiness, and truly don’t fear or doubt, then… what you believe, you will see.
For me, that is a difficult concept. I was raised to doubt, to question, and to fear. The first two seem wise, so why is the third one as much of a family tradition? Are they all related? That is one of the questions that the movie “The Secret” has brought into my life. Religious people who have faith seem to be very happy, and their lives seem to have a quality that supports them, even if they are occasionally in difficult times.
The Secret is also increasingly being presented by scientists with a New Age leaning, using quantum physics and other modern approaches which question basic assumptions that most of us have about our reality. It sounds convincing, and if that helps you build your confidence in order to try The Secret, that’s fine!
This is The Secret, I believe – that when you take the risk to truly let go of doubt, fear and questioning, you open a channel that prosperity flows through. There is no question that the people who were shown in the movie in all their glory have extraordinary success, not the slow building that most of us can do over a lifetime, but a river of riches that must have found their way to them in some way that most of us can’t understand.
