Nassau County is easy to get around. Every community either has a Long Island Rail Road Station or is near a community that does. There are three major highways running west to east. Southern State Parkway which becomes the Belt Parkway in Queens, Northern State Parkway, which becomes Grand Central Parkway in Queens and the Long Island Expressway which mergers with the Brooklyn Queens Expressway in Queens. As recently as the 1950’s, much of Nassau County was still farm land. And the fact that a lot of the county was developed so recently is probably the reason why it is easy to get around. The communities were built around the highways instead of the other way around with the purpose of making them easily accessible. Each community will have its own shopping center. A car is a necessity in Nassau County unless you are lucky enough to live right near everything, which is very unusual.
Many people who look at homes in Nassau County, also look at homes in nearby Queens County. What you will notice is that the prices, in general, are lower in Nassau County, but the taxes are higher. In Queens County you do not pay a separate school tax and that is one of the main reasons for the difference.
These properties are a good representation of what you can find in Nassau County for less than $400,000. Of course, properties come and go and there may be other options from time to time, but anything prices less than these are likely to need work.
