Barry Bonds is once again in the news. Barry Bonds arrived at spring training last week and some of his comments made the top story in the sports world.
What are my thoughts on the comments Barry Bonds had to say? Who cares? Personally I could care less what Barry Bonds has to say and it has nothing to do with Barry Bonds. Yeah Barry Bonds is a jerk, yes Barry Bonds isn’t very likable but you can say the same thing about Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez and Kobe Bryant and they’re all great players. No it has nothing to do with Barry Bonds; it has everything to do with the media.
The media’s overblown, constant talk of Barry Bonds has completely worn me out. I’d like to go one year without hearing the name Barry Bonds. I’m so tired of hearing the media talk about Barry Bonds that it has made me completely apathetic towards everything about Barry Bonds. Will Barry Bonds have a good season? I don’t care. Will Barry Bonds break the homerun record? I don’t care. Will Barry Bonds go to the Hall of Fame? I don’t care.
In one of my favorite television shows of all time, Sports Night, one of the characters says in one episode that their sports show has the ability to affect the fans’ love of the game. It’s completely true, unfortunately every sports show, network, magazine, or newspaper is affecting my love of the game in a negative way. Constantly forcing the same garbage about Barry Bonds over and over again has made me not care at all about possibly the most sacred record in all of sports. In fact I almost hope Barry Bonds does break the homerun record just to stick it to every member of the media. If Barry Bonds broke the homerun record and everyone of his interviews the rest of his life ended with him saying, “I broke the homerun record!” proceeded by him stinking his thumbs in his ears, wiggling his fingers and saying “neener neener neener” then I think the media totally deserves it.
I don’t understand at all why the media continues to interview Barry Bonds and furthermore why do they make a big deal when he makes a jerkish comment or says no comment at all. Barry Bonds has been a jerk for over a decade. If you’re still going to interview him you should expect a rude remark or a “no comment”. If you don’t like that Barry Bonds is rude or that he won’t answer your question then don’t stick a microphone in his face. It makes no sense to be angry about the way Barry Bonds acts and then to continue to pay attention to him. It’s like sitting on a chair of thumbtacks and yelling “Hey! This chair has thumbtacks in it!” But then instead of getting up and moving you stay seated on the thumbtacks.
If you don’t like Barry Bonds then don’t talk to him. If you don’t like Barry Bonds then don’t pay attention to him. Instead go interview Barry Zito the new acquisition of the Giants. Instead of talking about Barry Bounds talk about Lance Berkman one of the most underrated players in baseball. Instead of talking about Barry Bonds talk about Jose Reyes one of the most electric and entertaining players to ever step on a baseball field. Instead of getting rude comments from Barry Bonds go talk to David Wright whose uses the phrase “Yes Sir” about as much as Bonds uses the phrase “No Comment.”
Unfortunately Barry Bonds is going to be a big story the rest of this year and many years to come but I couldn’t care less. This writer will not write another article about Barry Bonds this year and possibly never again.
