Not many people may know Christopher Robert Evans, but the 25 year old actor from Sudbury, Massachusetts has been around in Hollywood for a few years. With roles in “Fantastic Four” and “Cellular,” he was once considered the next Tom Cruise. But, his movies turned out to be flops and his popularity fizzled. But with four movies coming out within the next seven months, 2007 might be Chris’ year.
Chris has already made it into the February 2007 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine as a fun, fearless male. He’s dated Jessica Biel, former star of TV’s 7th Heaven, for two years before breaking up in 2006. He’s been linked to Gisele Bundchen, who happens to be Leonardo Dicaprio’s former girlfriend. He’s also got a huge fan website, www.chris-evansv.net, and a Yahoo group, Chris Evans Unlimited. But, why hasn’t he made into the mainstream yet? Here’s a look at his work.
He started out as an intern at a casting agency before getting two small roles on “Boston Public” and “The Fugitive”. Then; he got a role as Cary Baston, one of three males in an all girls’ school on the short-lived Fox comedy series “Opposite Sex.” Once that was canceled; he was cast as Jake Wyler, a Freddie Prinze Jr. parody in the movie “Not Another Teen Movie.”
The movie, which even included a musical number and a shot of him in a whipped cream bikini, didn’t exactly make him a star, even though it grossed over 37 million dollars in the US alone. Three years later, Chris was cast in “The Perfect Score” with actresses Scarlett Johansson and Erika Christensen, about a group of teenagers plotting to steal the SATs.This movie was considered just another average teen film and made only over 4.8 million dollars on its first weekend. In 2004; Chris was also cast in “Cellular,” about a young man who set out to save a woman that calls him on his cell phone with a catch—if he hangs up, she dies. “Cellular” was supposed to be a big blockbuster and though it made over 32 million dollars in the US, it was considered a flop.
2005 brought Chris three movies. In London, he played an egotistical drug addict trying to get over his ex-girlfriend of 2 years. He starred in this movie with his girlfriend at the time, Jessica Biel. They broke up last year for the second time, and the little indie that could got horrible reviews and made only over 12 thousand dollars. In the movie Fierce People, which was only released at a couple of film festivals; Chris played Bryce Langley, a rich Harvard student who’s urges send him out of control. This movie also starred Diane Lane and Anton Yelchin, who can be seen in this month’s Alpha Dog. In Fantastic Four; Chris played Johnny Storm, a cocky pilot who gains the ability to control fire after being hit with a cosmic cloud. The movie was also set to be a blockbuster but since it was released the week after Tom Cruise’s blockbuster, War of the Worlds; the moment had fizzled. Fortunately, the movie did beat WotW in its first week and ended the box office slump as well, making over 56 million dollars in its opening weekend in the US and 154 million in the US altogether.
2006 was a slow year for Chris but this year; he has the sequel to Fantastic Four, Sunshine by 28 Days Later and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Nanny Diaries with “Perfect Score” co-star Scarlett Johansson.
In Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer; Chris will reprise his role as Johnny Storm as he and his teammates: Ioan Gruffuld’s Reed Richards, Jessica Alba’s Sue Storm and Michael Chiklis’ Ben Grimm fight the Silver Surfer. The movie also brings Julian McMahon back into the fold. In Sunshine; Chris plays Mace, an engineer among a group of astronauts that set out to re-ignite the sun, which has died out. The movie also stars 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh, as well as Troy’s Rose Byrne. In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Chris will be the voice of Casey Jones, the human hockey player that befriends the turtles. Sarah Michelle Gellar will provide the voice of April O’Neill, the human reporter that also befriends the turtles. In The Nanny Diaries; Chris plays the Harvard Hottie, who just happens to be Scarlett Johansson’s love interest.
In 2008; Evans will play Jimmy, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks in Tennessee Williams’ “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond.” Evans’ love interest will be played by Lindsay Lohan, who has just checked herself into rehab four days ago.
Chris Evans is most definitely a fun, fearless male. With his four movies coming out this year and another getting ready to be filmed this Spring; this might finally be his shot at super stardom. I know that I am a fan of his and I’m hoping that a lot more people will catch on to what I already know is true.
