I am one of those weirdos that does not subscribe to cable TV. I have a great TV/DVD combo, but with no service. Why, might you ask? Well, I feel that I have a right to choose. This means that I want to be the boss of what goes into my brain, and I want that material to be commercial free, thank you very much. I signed up with Netflix, and decided to take matters into my own hands. I started watching a few TV series on DVD that I had heard everyone buzzing about, but had never watched, due to my limited media exposure.
I watched “Alias”, which was great for the first two seasons. I watched “24” which was also very good. “Lost” is another that has kept my attention. Then through random magazines I had picked up at the airport, I kept hearing about this one show “Prison Break”. Over and over and over! I saw pictures everywhere of this guy, Wentworth Miller, the star of Prison Break. It was as if I was supposed to watch it! Everywhere I turned was another magazine, or something else on the computer mentioning this show. Well, even the title interested me, and what I had seen of this Wentworth fellow interested me, so I decided to make it next on my Netflix cue. I would just rent the first disc and see how I liked it.
I could tell you that about 3 minutes into the show I already liked it. After the first episode, I was ready to finish the whole disc. I immediately logged onto Netflix and rearranged my cue so that I could continue receiving the rest of the discs from Season One in order. I could not believe I had waited so long to see this wonderful show!!
For the next few nights of watching until completion, I was absolutely mesmerized. This show is pure genius. The characters are all absolutely incredible! The tattoo idea is amazing. The characters were so well selected, as if they took a lifetime to prepare for their roles. The production is seamless, smooth, intriguing.
Now don’t get me started about this Mr. Miller fellow. The man is fantastic! He plays “serious” with finesse. Not too many fluctuations in facial expressions of his are going on here, so when you see a twinkle in the eye, or a slight smerk, it is like a little ray of sunshine coming through. He plays someone who is a deep thinker, and it is mentioned only once in the first season, that he is something of a genius, who sees things in greater detail than the average person. As an added bonus, he is also quite attractive. This fact, I must admit, increased my interest in the show.
This show has it all. Suspense, drama, humor, and more. T-Bag, the heavily southern-accented pedophile, keeps me rolling with his one liners. John, the mafia guy, is just nothing less than perfection. Sara plays the doctor role perfectly. I like her character in particular because she comes across as mature, smart, and strong. It is so refreshing to see these traits portrayed in a female role. Women need to see more characters like Sara.
If you have not seen Prison Break yet, you have got to see it. Rent Season One on DVD. You’ll be so glad you did! It is better than any TV series, TV movie, or movie in a theater that I have seen in a very long time. I have such respect for the people who produced and acted in this fine show, because it is so very involved. There is so much that goes into making this program, and just into creating Michael’s tattoo each week. You will be able to find out more in the “extras” on the Season One video. I’m certain that like me, after watching this, you’ll consider it time well spent, and will be eagerly waiting for more!
