Scientology is quickly becoming one of the most popular religion choices among celebrities worldwide. It is the general feeling that if celebrities endorse this way of living, many people who look up to these celebrities will follow. One of the most notable power duos who support Scientology are Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. They have been big supporters of the religion and continue to recruit many of their friends to join. The latest news is that they may have convinced Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony to consider joining. All of us question why many people are joining this religion. What is Scientology and where did it come from? That is the question that will be answered today.
Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, better known as L. Ron Hubbard, is the founding father of Scientology. Hubbard graduated from a Ivy League level college in which he focused on developing his writing skills. After he graduated, he took these skills and applied them to writing for several pulp magazines. Pulp magazines were pulp fiction novels pieces from authors around the world. Hubbard perfected his craft over the years and started to build quite the following. He stopped being published for a short period of time to join the United States Navy in 1941. After fulfilling his obligations, Hubbard released a book that would form a cult following: Dianetics.
Dianetics was a book that described how someone could better themselves through continues self-improvement techniques. The Dianetics concept became a hit, selling roughly 150,000 copies. The increased interest in Hubbard’s self-improvement techniques led to the creation of the Hubbard Dianetic Research Foundation. The foundation did not last that long and soon disbanded because Hubbard did not trust many of the people who worked with him. He felt that many of the people were communists and could not be trusted. Hubbard ended up having more free time to dedicate himself even more to Dianetics. Hubbard decided to expand Dianetics into a greater philosophy, which became known as Scientology.
Hubbard began calling Scientology a new religion. He claimed that it offered people the opportunity to gain understanding on the exact methodology that would help them achieve awareness of their overall spiritual existence across many different lifetimes. By gaining this new found level of understanding, people would find that they would become more effective humans in the physical world. Viewed as different and outrageous by many, Scientology received a lot of negative reaction. Many people claimed that it resembled a cult and it’s basic ideas were just that, ideas.. All of these ideas were just the opinions of one man who could not be trusted at best. This caused Scientology to remain on a lower level of recognition than many of the other religions around the world.
Over the years Scientology grew into the Church of Scientology. This was an organization and a place for people to practice their beliefs in Scientology. Over the past ten years, Scientology has expanded it’s reach in the celebrity world and recruited more and more members. Their goal is to recruit as many high profile people as possible to help the church gain more exposure. Many of these people go out of their way to express their beliefs in this religion in order to draw more people towards it. Tom Cruise has become known for his solid beliefs in the practice of Scientology and has even received a lot of heat for pushing his views on the public and his friends.
Scientology will continue to grow as long as they keep recruiting high profile celebrities to pass on their message. Celebrities have the most access to the public and can spread the message at a greater rate. This is why we see the possibility of Jennifer Lopez and her husband Marc Anthony joining the Church of Scientology. It is a complicated religion created by a man who believed in what he wrote. Surprisingly, many people believe in the same things that he did, hence the many followers.
