I know. You don’t like this article if you are an LA native, but I went on a vacation to LA, and I was a bit disappointed. I am not even from New York City. I’m from New Jersey, but I have been to New York City plenty of times, and I would much rather visit that city than Los Angles. Here is why.
The public transportation in LA is horrible.
Have you ever tried to get somewhere in LA on a bus or train? You have to ride the bus forever to get to where you are going and that is if you can find where to catch a bus. While in LA, I was told that long ago someone was trying to promote the motor vehicle. Therefore, LA’s public transportation is not really valued. The subway is very limited. It only goes to certain places and those certain places are very few. One day I had to figure out how to get to the place I was staying from a place I had been dropped off. I had no idea what I was doing, and it was dark outside. Unfortunately, I never figured it out. I called a cab.
The public transportation in New York is easy to navigate and efficient.
I am convinced that you can get from any one place in New York City to another place in New York City in twenty minutes or less. All you need is a 2.00 metro card. You don’t even to have to start out knowing where you are going. Just sit next to someone and ask him or her how you get to where you want to go. People in New York City take the train so much that most of them know the routes like the back of their hand. If you happen to find someone who does not know what they are talking about, there are easy to follow maps posted in the station and on the trains.
The traffic in LA is something you don’t want to deal with.
Every time you want to travel somewhere in LA, whether it be to an audition or an exhibit, you have to hop on a major highway and travel for miles. The state of
California is based on acres and acres of farmland. Therefore, you have to do a lot of traveling between destinations. When you hit those highways, there is usually a lot of traffic, and it can take you up to an hour to get somewhere.
The traffic in New York is bad, but why deal with traffic when you have a great public transportation system?
LA is only diverse because it is near New Mexico.
As I traveled through LA, I constantly wondered where all the minorities were. Where did they hang out? I did not see a good amount of African Americans or Latinos anywhere. There were many Asians, but I did not see them partying anywhere in particular.
New York City is a mixture of different cultures.
You do not have to go too far to see an assortment of different people in the city of New York. They are all over the place. You can find diverse groups in the coffee shops, walking down the street, or just hanging out at the average mall.
Only some parts of LA are a nice stroll down a path of shops and sites. Then you have to get in your car and drive somewhere else.
The places that people talk about in LA, such as the shops and celebrity hangouts are only on a few blocks in certain parts of the city. Those parts are not close to each other at all.
In New York City you can begin walking on Broadway, continue to Times Square, and then proceed to Tribeca and see all kinds of expensive shops and restaurants on the way.
In between these parts of town, you may even hit Canal Street depending on which way you are going. Canal is ten blocks or more of shopping and good food. Then when you have finished walking, you are either in Tribeca or ChinaTown, another place full of eye candy.
The people in LA are “different.”
In LA, everyone has their laptop out in the coffee houses working on a screenplay. The most popular magazine is something that lists all the film and TV jobs in Hollywood. Most people have got a story about having once been a production assistant, and if you ask someone for directions, they look at you as if you are trying to beat them to an audition somewhere.
The people in New York City are artsy.
In New York City, you have a one in five chance of bumping into someone who has tickets to tonight’s Broadway show. You have a two in five chance of meeting someone who can get you a job in advertising, and most people won’t mind sharing a cab with you.
There you have it, my reasons why New York City is better than LA. I hope you enjoy visiting both cities, and if you do not agree with me feel free to comment.
