I got a subscription to Netflix a bit over a year ago, and tried out Blockbuster Online a few months after that. I’ve never been a guy who was too absorbed in movies, but both services were fantastic–I finally got to catch up on all of the movies and TV shows my friends had been telling me about
1. Unlimited movies every month.
There are some plans with both Netflix and Blockbuster that limit the amount of movies you get per month in order to keep the price down below five bucks, but don’t do that–part of the allure of these services is the fact that they allow you to watch a virtually unlimited amount of movies. Even if you just watch movies from an online rental service on weekends, you’ll wind up watching way more than the cheap plans provide; the plans that offer unlimited movies per month and two movies out a time are a great choice.
2. Fast delivery.
Netflix and Blockbuster have numerous distribution sites around the country, which allow them to ship movies to their customers very quickly. I live somewhat near St. Louis, and I receive movies the day after they’re shipped. This cuts down on the waiting and allows more movie rentals per month.
3. Massive selection.
Sure, I could watch the newest Will Ferrell movie, but I can also watch an obscure Japanese film that came out in 1964 if I want to. That’s the power of having a massive collection of movies at your fingertips; no matter what the title is, chances are you’ll be able to find it simply by typing in the movie title and adding it to your queue.
4. In store rentals (Blockbuster)
Netflix can’t offer this next one, but Blockbuster can; their Total Access pass lets you return movies you rented online to a Blockbuster store and grab a movie while you’re there, if you’re so inclined. Of course, if you don’t ever want to get off of your couch, you don’t have to, but it’s nice to at least have the option of getting a movie to watch more immediately.
5. TV Rentals.
You don’t have to just rent movies from Blockbuster Online or Netflix; TV series that are out on DVD like the Sopranos and Arrested Development are available, too. If you’re not too much of a movie buff, the services are still fantastic for this reason–plus, you don’t have to shell out money to HBO or Showtime to watch their programming.
For the money, an online movie rental service like Blockbuster or Netflix is a great investment. You get dozens of hours of entertainment per month for a very low price, and you can watch TV shows and movies that you always heard about but never got a chance to sit down with. Short of shipping popcorn with the DVDs, there’s really no way that Blockbuster or Netflix could have a better service, and each offers a trial period if you aren’t completely sold yet. Check the links at the end of this article for the websites of each rental service, and sign up; it’s a lot of fun for a small price of admission.
